hi. i've got a new computer on order with an nvidia geforce fx 5900 ultra 256mb. someone on the gamespy forums told me that the game battlefield 1942 is pretty much incompatible with geforce fx cards. was he smoking crack?

Probably smoking crack, I haven't heard of any such thing. Would be pretty bad for nv if were true, but I highly doubt it.

yeah, i highly doubt it too. on the screensavers on tech tv they play bf1942 on their lan party all the time. oh, and all their pc's use nvidia video cards.

Heh..not sure what credibility Screensavers/TechTV has left after their"cheating drivers" mess.

But I highly doubt BF1942 wont run on nvidia Hardware.

lol... low blow there :)

some people might have the odd issue with a game or application using THEIR setup.. this does not mean it is a general problem... I have yet to hear of this particular 'issue' on any of the tech sites that I frequent...

It runs fine on my 5900 Ultra. I did have to edit the video config file (something to do with refresh rates) or the game didn't start at all.

Haven't heard anything about this issue anywhere. Probably just a rumour.

Definitely wouldn't trust a thing TechTV says about video cards, though.

here's his latest rant on the subject. this is on the gamespy forums. the card in question is the nvidia geforce fx 5900 ultra 256mb.

Dude, you aren't listening to me. I am merely suggesting to avoid that card if you wish to play battlefield 1942. I repeat GO LOOK at the minimum requirements for the game on Ea's official site or http://www.planetbattlefield.com . There is a list of chipsets that battlefield 1942 supports. It does not say anything about the nVidia FX series. Key part being FX. The people at tech tv may be running TI 4200-4800 type cards. Maybe there is a patch to fix it but I wouldn't go to all the hassle. You see, I went to the planetbattlefield tech help forum and asked them if the game would work with the Fx series of cards. I received several replies along the lines of "it creates graphical glitches/objects, weird static, etc". So I bought a radeon 9600 pro instead of a geforce Fx 5200. Unless you have already bought the computer and even if you have, you should try and convince the person you bought it from to switch video cards for you, explain your dilemna. THe cards are, after all the same price.

Conclusion: If you want Battlefield 1942, you should change to a radeon 9800 pro or the like, but if you just want to play new stuff that is coming like doom 3 and half-life 2 then keep it. I am also not too sure about you being able to play older games, you know what I mean? Like Jedi knight 2.
Like I said just check out the minimum requirements and see for yourself if you don't beleive me.

I just bought a fx 5200, and it runs BF fine.
As a matter of fact, I tested it out specifically with BF, because that and Star Wars Galaxies, are the only games i have.
I used to get like 20 FPS in BF, with MED Settings...now I get 50+, using ALL JACKED UP GRAPHICS!!!!! :P
So, it works...

SWG on the other hand is a entirely different story...it seems sometimes my old GeFoce2MX 400 ran it beter, maybe it just needs some tweaking...

yeah, i don't know why that guy seems to think that since the fx line of cards isn't listed it isn't going to run. although the "powered by" or "best on" logos are disturbing, i don't think it's gotten to that point just yet.

Yeah, that guy is smoking some heavy shiznit. Just 'cause a card ain't listed don't mean it won't work. My 9800 Pro ain't on a bunch of those lists but so far it plays every game I've tried just fine and dandy. :D

Go ahead and play BF on your card, I'm sure you'll highly enjoy it.

BF1942 does not run on my PC with the 44.65 drivers. It runs very well with the 44.03 but when install the newer ones it wont even launch the game. Uninstall back to 44.03 and all is well. So maybe this is the problem the gent was referring to.
Dell 2.4 ghz
Geoforce 4 TI 4600
512 meg of ram

Also I have not heard of any thing about refreshe rate with BF1942.

If it works fine with the 44.03 I would not switch until the problems are addressed. I'm using the 44.03 dets and I refuse to change them since im not doing all my tests again:p
