Bastered finally arrived from fed ex this morning, didnt get to install it till I got home this evening. Been playing it for about 2 hours, and I gotta say I really like it. No cheezyness... its a down to earth driving experience racing game. I got in.. I started racing...most of the time I won (I think the difficulty setting the game put me on because of the first race was "pussy mode" ;) ) , but all the time I was progressing, accumulating points, unlocking minor and major achievements.

Control wise I am using the xbox360 wired controller. At first I thought the default use of the right stick for gas/break was inventive, but the 2 triggers are still better as I improved my lead lap times by double when I switched back.

Sound is amazing, this is the first racer where I can finally hear more then one sound coming from my car, you can finally hear the different sounds made from your engine, camshaft/gearbox, tires, and the game totaly exploits surround sound. The NFS original music is all good but the selections of tracks played during replays (You can apparently turn music on during races too, the volume level is set to 0 by default) sucked hard.

Graphics are real nice and clean, and I guess the tracks were nice and detailed..i couldn't tell because this is the first racer that has gotten me to concentrate so hard on driving and less on looking at the pretty buildings. ;) The cawkpit is really nice and I don't miss my default bumper view much at all. The only issue is if you bust up your front end, you can have a hard time seeing the road. Also some hills are hard to see over. Bumper mode in replay is a nice way to take in the speed of the game though. The action cam in the replay dosnt seem as exciting as GRID's was.

Performance is very nice. I was able to max out my graphic settings on my 8800gtx, and I also used a 2x/2x aa and af settings. Normaly I would be content with 0x/4x (Gotta have that AF, in driving games the road is one huge AF indicator bar) but I was trying to look down the road and see the indicator for hard turns and got really annoyed at the jaggies. Thankfully 2xaa was plenty for me to take away the edge. More or less I was quite impressed with the engine, like GRID it is fairly clean and optimized. I only noticed one issue in 3rd person perspective mode, you could see that behind the car was a super short draw distance, and that building reflections on the car would pop-out.

I have it. I picked it up today.

I have to say, this SLAUGHTERS Grid. It is SO good, it's "almost" a sim. But not quite. You have even have to rev match (blips) on downshifts. I really like this. There is no more BROWN piss filter!

a couple Cons, though.

When getting up to high speed (even with motion blur OFF), the c0-ckpit blurs out.
Damage is STILL only cosmetic. You can ram a car into oblivion, and can still run wide open. The screen will blur out, and will turn black & white, but you can still drive it.

I'm currently upto level 9/50.

I was hoping for some kind of open wheel, but this is fun. The first NFS I got was Underground 1. and every subsequent version. This blows them all away.

Current setup is Phenom II 955/GTX260/4GB Ram
I can run it wide open as far as my monitor goes. 1920x1440 8xAA/16xAF (with 15 cars).

I know this isn't true, since every review has mentioned damage impacts the driving of the car. Check your options menu.

You may be right, I am only running it on medium difficulty, until I get used to the cars. But I don't run ANY driving aids.

There is an option for damage to effect driving, although you can't damage the car enough to become undriveable.

Some more moments of zen, as much as I want to play in cawkpit mode, I just performed so much better in 3rd person (which is odd...I usualy hate the 3rd person mode...car becomes to floaty). I think because I am now using an analog controller, and ive got an indicator of if I am going to fast for turns, I now have enough info to turn better now, and of course I can see farther down the road. Maybe when I get to know the tracks like the back of my hand, I can enjoy more cawkpit driving. I just opened up tier 4 and find that I need to retry a race once or twice to get the hang of it enough to win.

btw I suggest turning the sensitivity of your analog controls down to %6-%10. You will need the slight touches of the controls to maintain your car (jamming down the pedal in a turn is guarenteed to cause time loss and control loss now, you need to baby it).

Oh yea...DONT PLAY THE FIRST CAR BATTLE! Oh my god this is a painful track. If the pc dosn't get an irrecoverable lead on you in the first 30 seconds...he will get it on the last 5 seconds in which you do a 180 turn on a skate ramp with a huge bump that only the pc knows how to travel over at speed. Its a kick in the nuts when every other battle track in the tier is 1/3rd of the length and no tricks.

PC still cheats somewhat.. if you spend too much time treading stone/sand its over. Yet I will see the pc with 2 wheels off the road and lose very little or no speed. On the canyon map there was usualy one car that ended up in the edge of the road turning up a dust cloud for several yards and never lost position, something that you will find just dosn't happen. The stone and gravel here is pretty brutal.

And I swear the tunnel walls are magnetic! ;)

Fun game, for the brief moment I played it. Performance was okay, is SLI supported ?

I need to pick up a copy fast though.

Well I've spent a few hours with the game and its pretty amazing to see such a turn around for NFS. I really enjoy this one. I'm playing on Pro all assists off with my G25 and it feels nice. I just finished driving the Lotus and man it was allot of fun. The sound of the cars and environments must be heard to understand how good they sound compared to other NFSs as of late. It's no iRacing but the tracks and cars feel very good in the force feedback. Visuals are very nice, I've been using the in-car veiw. I don't mind the blur but it shouldn't blur a car right next to you. The pushed back in your seat feeling is pretty fun they did a really good job with the in-car camera. AI is okay but I do get the feeling there might be some rubber banding going on and some manufactured race experiences like really close finishes or keeping you in the pack. Going off the road does result in a feeling of being pulled into the wall in Pro mode at least. The cars reflections aren't all that but in game and replay graphics look crisper than those of unmodified GRID. Even if there is some rubberbanding going on I really enjoy the races and the work put into this NFS.
