Shrink ISO - Is it possible?

Here's my problem. I downloaded Chronicles of Riddick and made an ISO out of the files. It comes out to 7.06GB while the DVD only holds 4.7GB. Is there anyway I could shrink the ISO or compress it somehow to fit on the DVD?

Dual layer is the only way you could do this
But this is piracy, and as far as I know it isn't allowed on the forums.

Well, you can download games legally so lets give the benefit of the doubt;)

As for the Q, if its not already an iso you can start by deleting any language files you wont use. You can also remove drivers, DX, and other such files. If you want to shrink an already iso file you can use something like poweriso to do the same. I've never heard of compressing it though and tbh for games I doubt you'll be able to remove all those gigs with just drivers and language files.

1) This is obviously a pirated downloaded game, every game I've downloaded legally has been a .exe. You never get .iso's (I could be wrong here....).

2) The answer to your question is no, you can't compress a .iso. It's designed to be burned on a dual layer dvd. Out of curiosity, why do you want to burn it onto a disk? Just mount it using virtual clone drive (http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html) and install it...

Maybe I should have been more clear. I created the ISO out of the files I downloaded from D2D so I could burn it to a disc as a backup. I would really hate to download 7GB every time I reinstalled. Unfortuneatley I do not have an external hard drive.

Again you'll need a dual layer dvd, unless you manage to find a bunch of useless files in the iso and delete them.

Your best bet is just to pack the game file into a rar that is split into 2GB chunks and burn that onto 2 discs.

My apologies....apparently I didn't fully read your first post. It's just that usually when someone starts talking about burning .iso's to a disk of a game they downloaded....the first thing that pops to mind is it's pirated. Again, I'm sorry for assuming.

Since I now understand that you don't need to be able to install the game from the disks, it's just as a backup of the downloaded .exe file, I would do what Bman suggested above. Take the original .exe file and use winRar on it. Make sure to specify to break it into DVD sized chunks (I'm pretty sure theres an actual option to make it split at the size of a CD, DVD, etc). Then just burn each .rar file onto a disk.

To be completely honest though, you should really invest in an external harddrive. That way you don't need to copy the files off the disks, unRAR, then install when you want to reinstall for whatever reason. Just need to attach the external drive and run the .exe. But to each his own.

Dual Layer DVD would be the easiest way, but an external drive would be the most cost effective and fastest solution in the long run.

You can get a 320Gb USB drive (no AC adapter required) for like $70. Its faster, much more portable (once you get a lot on it) and more durable.

If you don't need anything too portable you can get a 1Tb drive with an AC adapter for $90 which is even faster, even more reliable and is much cheaper per GB than dual layer DVDs.

I would like to get an external hard drive, but money is a tight so that's going to have to wait. I was looking at a 1TB since I mainly wanted it to store all of my hunting pictures. Might stop at Walmart and see if I can get a 3 pack or something of the dual layer discs. Thanks for the help.

Just go to cd-2-dvd.com (http://www.cd-2-dvd.com) and get the conversion method or custom installer there. They have Butcher Bay and Dark Athena methods listed. :)

That's another reason why I love Steam, too. You can archive all of the downloaded games from them and break them up into any format you want. But the thing is that you sometimes still download the language files for the games which I don't want. The website above is awesome because they tell you which exact files you can delete as well.

I would still do the dual layer dvd route imo. I picked up a 25 pack for $20 a few months ago, so they arn't THAT expensive now adays...

Neither of those will work on games. Both noted are used for Commercial DVD Copying/Shrinking...

If the game installer allows you to search for missing files (ie: insert disc containing setupX.cab), then you would be able to put some of the cab files onto another DVD.
