View Full Version : Dot artifacts ATi
I this this deserves its own thread....as the more I look the more I find on this issue.
Anyone with ATI cards please check and see if you are experiencing these artifacts.
I'm torn between whether its a driver or hardware issue...I would like to hear every ones input,
even if you do not have the issue.
At first it happened in Crysis DX10 and only in the shadows...after installing my 2nd I noticed it on my desktop, browser, games, and intros to games.

It appears to be driver based, as there are users with varying configs all with the same flashing dots.
ATI Driver's FTW!
I don't have this issue and I'm running the 8.660 beta.
Sounds like something is messed about between the output signal and the LCD. I hope it's driver based.

Wow if its the drivers.

Yea, I'm really hoping that was a hardware issue. Something overheating maybe. I hope the VRMs are as underpowered as they were with the 4870s.

Yeah that would be pretty pathetic. Some of those linked threads are over a year old...

Try to unplug second crossfire bridge. I have only one. I did noticed white dots in Crysis Warhead in specific location i used to see with my GTX280 SLI setup as well. Other then that everything is ok.

I remember there was a bug on Catalyst drivers that caused small dots in Crysis DX10, but it was fixed loooong ago. It only happened in Crysis (I saw it myself) and only in DX10. I will try Crysis again this weekend, you never know, maybe the bug has returned (it wouldn't be the first time)

Yeah..with my 1st card it was only in Crysis DX10, the 2nd it was everywhere:(
Thanx in advance for checking this out...I look forward to see what you come up with.

I got white artifacts in Crysis as well right after the release with non-optimized nV drivers. It was caused by forced AF while using POM IIRC.

Hell Yeah I got dots in crysis, they don't move just change with mouse look but they really are not everywhere, just a certain parts in the game, but there so small, I'm moving kind of fast in the game, so then there gone pretty fast also, but I know what your taking about.:( I had my fan on both cards at 64%, so when I exited out of the game my temps where right at 50C, so the cards seem to run cool on my end anyways.

It is the driver's, no worries. I just started playing Risen and noticed the little failing memory like white artifacts. I have a single 4870 1gb.
I can revert to the 9.9 drivers, IDK if you 5870 guys can or not.

UPDATE:
I reinstalled the 9.9 drivers, Risen is fine. No white dots. Definitely a driver issue. Let's hope it gets hotfixed pretty damn quick.
I had the dots in DX10 crysis when I first got my card. Drivers fixed it.

I don't think they will work on the 5870s ???

Are you overclocking the memory at all on your cards? I bumped the core to 900 left the memory stock because its not a bottleneck, but I have no dots in Crysis.

Haven't got it on a single HD 5870 here using the CD drivers. I'm currently testing BETA 9.10s rflair provided over @ Rage. They seem to be fine too.

For what it's worth. I found a way to fix the white dots...partially.
I just use the extremequality 1.34 config and under shadows r_TerrainAO_FadeDist= I make it =3.
2.5 worked but as I zoomed in with the aiming, there were some white dots...but using 3 fixed that.
However, as I player further, I got to some areas where some boxes are having white dots on them...
I hope there's some other settings that further helps with this...the white dots are kinda distracting as they dance around.

I got them with those drivers. Went to 9.9's and have no issues, of course my 5870 2gb isn't here yet, so I have the luxury/disappointment of going back to previous drivers.

9.9 drivers won't safe you when your 5870 arrives, 9.9 doesn't support that card.
if was to guess i would say it is hardware issue, and drivers could be programmed to mask/avoid sections of video memory that are affected.
similar how bad sectors on hdd are marked to be avoided.
just a guess.

Sounds plausible,
I think that it's rather how the driver's access memory that would be changed.
I don't think that the memory on the card is actually bad, rather the driver's are addressing it incorrectly, causing the artifacts...who knows?
ATI maybe.......

I have started to randomly get white dots too. The ones on your desktop screenshot are nearly identical to what I am seeing. I thought it was a power supply issue (I was running 500 watt), so I bought a 750 Corsair power supply, but the white dots still appear. They aren't always there; sometimes they are, sometimes not. Really frustrating. I have also tried different voltage settings on my CPU, but I can still get the dots, randomly. There doesn't seem to be a pattern as to when they appear.
I really hope it's drivers; I don't want to have to RMA the thing.

I'm using a single XFX 5870 card. I didn't notice the artifacts until after the first week. Maybe some were there from the beginning, but I'm not sure.
Right now, there are no artifacts. Like I said, they only appear sometimes, which is annoying in it's own way.
For a while I thought it was because I had my C2D E8400 overclocked to 3.33 ghz (from 3 ghz), but I've seen the artifacts even at stock speed and stock voltages.
