Not sure what review you are looking at, but I have not seen one review where either card gets "smoked".
The review at the very top of the nV News page is more favorable to the 5900 than the 9800 even though the 5900 appears to be the 256 MB Ultra.

Um.. what review did you read... because the Ocadiction review that is the one on the Front page he is refering to here..
http://www.ocaddiction.com/articles/video/fx_5900ultra_vs_radeon_9800pro/
Has this conclusion....
Conclusion
Let's break down performance of both cards and see which one comes out on top.
UT2k3 - FX 5900 Ultra - While both cards perform well, the FX 5900 comes out on top
AquaMark - R9800 Pro - The R9800 takes home the gold in this real-world benchmark
Comanche 4 - R9800 Pro - The R9800 also wins out by an edge for this nearly obsolete benchmark
Specviewperf 7.0 - R9800 Pro - This one is really close but the #'s lean to the R9800
Code Creatures - FX 5900 Ultra - The 5900 beats up the R9800 pretty good in this intensive benchmark
Splinter Cell - R9800 Pro - Hands down, the R9800 takes it in this awesome game from UBISoft
ShaderMark - R9800 Pro - While the FX 5900 Ultra makes a good showing, the R9800 wins this one
3DMark 01 SE Build 330 - R9800 Pro - The R9800 takes top honors with this tried and true synthetic benchmark
3DMark 03 Build 320 - FX 5900 Ultra - Should we include this? Possibly not, however the FX 5900 wins with WHQL Det Drivers
3D Visual Quality - R9800 Pro hands down
And the winner is.........The FIC ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB. We compared these cards in every category we could think of and in the end, we saw better performance overall from the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. Did the FX 5900 fail to impress us? No, not at all. We believe both cards are worthy of any good system but we do have to tip our hats to the excellent performance that the Radeon 9800 Pro has showed us here today.

Hes probably talking about this one:
http://www.ocaddiction.com/articles/video/fx_5900ultra_vs_radeon_9800pro/
In that particular review, Id say YES, the 5900 Ultra is getting smoked because the 9800 Pro 128Mb leads most of the tests, yet it costs $150 less.
Just my $2 :D

Um, whatever....if that is your definition of "smoked", then more power to ya....
Well BBEA,..on pure performance, it is close, with the edge going to the 9800Pro, it appears.
On price/performance ratios...the 9800Pro could be said to 'smoke' the 5900Ultra.

Especially when they are using build 320 of 3dmark03... methinks the radeon would win this too if they used 330 w/o the nvidia cheats. Yes I said cheats. ;) We all know it.

Well why don't we just jump on a "jump to conclusions" mat
There were several reviews when the FX 5900 Ultra first came out where the 5900 Ultra "smoked" the Radeon 9800 Pro in virtually all tests, including the Doom 3 tests.
Firingsquad did one review recently with "custom" demos where the 9800 Pro had the edge over the 5900 Ultra in some tests, and then four days later they made more intensive "custom" demos where the FX 5900 Ultra came out on top again. Clearly, there is a good deal of variance in these test results depending on what is being benchmarked. Also, the FX series has already made significant headway in image quality and speed with the current detonators, and the next set of detonators certainly should help.

Just to show how results can be so different, look at this review at Firingsquad, where the FX 5900 comes out ahead over the 9800 Pro at every resolution in Splinter Cell:

All the reviews out there make it look like it's a pretty close race to me. To be honest, I really wanted to make the jump to a 9700 or 9800, just to try an ATI card once. I've only owned nvidia cards, from the TNT2 to the Geforce 1, and have had a Geforce 3 for a while now. However, I play Neverwinter Nights a lot, and anyone who knows ATI's drivers in regard to that game knows that a lowly Geforce 3 puts both the 9700 and 9800 to shame on that game (no AA/AF), which is pretty sad. If ATI gets its act together with just this game, it would probably be enough for me to consider getting a 9700 or 9800. However, with the new 3.5 Catalysts actually creating more problems in NWN, by the time they get around to making the game playable, I probably will have already upgraded to a 5600 Ultra or 5900.

yeah , yeah, 3.5 CAT even got rid of there 3DMark2003 support also, so wooohoo !!
Having the card myself, I must say that it is an excellent card. I don't think there is any need to buy the 256MB version of 9800PRO or the 5900Ultra as the performance is very close and 128 is much cheaper.
As far as one card 'smoking' the the other, I don't think "smoke" is the right term here. One card dominates where the other lacks in my opinion. Performance on them is close, but as far as one being cheaper and getting similar results, the 9800PRO 128MB is a much better buy for the time being. ;)

I think it smoked.
1.) Its lost a review to ati's #2 video card.
2.) http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/030624/sftu011_1.html
3.) The 9800pro 128 is much cheaper than the 5900Ultra 256.
4.) Nvidia is probably still cheating.
5.) The 9800 has superior AA.
I don't think it was a photo finish by no means.:p
