If nvidia does'nt have anything by the end of January 2010,as for as that goes by the end of this year, are you going to keep waiting for the GT300 or get a HD5870 or a HD5870x2.I think I have done made up my mind ,I am going to get a HD5870x2 unless it is cheaper to get two HD5870 and run crosss-fire.The spec's look great on the GT300 or Fermi, what ever it is called. But ATI has done a Great job with the HD 5870 and the 5850 also looks good.I just keep hearing bad rummors about the Fermi ,low yeilds, massive leakage,it just does'nt look good for nvidia even if the rummors are just half true.IMO this looks like it did when ATI came out with the Radeon 9700pro.

There are a some key differences:
1. Fermi has been shown running a tech demo 5X faster than it's predecessor. This won't translate to 5X the performance in games as the tech demo is undoubtedly optimized to show improvements in the new shader design, but even if they had just doubled the SPs and added DX11 like ATi did, Fermi would be competitive. NVIDIA did much more than that though by adding a cache level, out of order execution, etc..
2. No one credible is really disputing that Fermi will be more powerful than the HD5870, the questions this time are more along the lines of how much more it will cost due to it's far more advanced design.
3. This year has shown us that PhysX is worth having (Batman AA, Darkest of Days, Cryostasis, Mirror's Edge) and reviews of 3D Vision and CUDA apps have been strong as well. If Fermi launches with an "Eye Finity" type functionality, there won't be any real reason to consider ATi cards unless it's lower cost.
The negative rumors are 90% from Charlie D./SemiAccurate, and giving him credit for being "half true" is charitable.
yes.
I dont need anything powerfull atm. everything runs fine.
worst case scenario is prices will go down sharply.
also i am curios to see what will come out of this 59xx series seeing that they were on one of the drivers :O
phyx wont be a deciding factor for me. price / performance will. dx11/w7 i think is going to take off much better than vista/10 (tho vista...just runs fine for me ><)
Noone can say if Fermi will be faster or not.Ati is also planning a new architecture for Q3 2010 so why buy Fermi when you can wait for that too?Its an endless cycle!!
IMHO things are simple. You buy a card when you need to buy a card. You need it now,buy a 5870 and if not wait until you do.

DX 11 will also run on Vista. I had couple problems with Vista, most reviews talk about Window 7 as better OS so I decided to get it with clean install on new SSD.
For me the HD 5870 would not be much improvement. Hope to see the dual GPU HD 5870 soon, probaly called HD 5970 (just a guess). It would be nice to see the Fermi at the same time, to compare before deciding what to buy.
I was thinking about buying two HD 5870 now, but the cost for the dual GPU card is hopefully going to be lower plus I prefer to have single card.

/sigh...
Heinz, i will be switching to W7 once i get a new card. Just dont need it now. 1920x1080 runs for me :D
I just want to see what nvidia will bring out. I have a feeling they will bring out a very solid card at a price :P.

Just replaced my OC'd 280GTX with an OC HD5870. Don't regret it at all. This thing smokes my GTX by alot. Very happy with the upgrade, there is no reason to wait. Nvidia won't have anything till next year and resell on a HD5870 will be alot better than a 280, 260, 275, etc come next year. If I need to sell and upgrade then, I will. But there is no reason to wait. The HD5870 is a fantastic product and a big upgrade over the current cards.
Also, Im done with $599 GPUs. Nvidia can suck it.

Anyone with a 4870 / GTX 260 or higher can wait comfortably until Fermi arrives, and decide later. There is no reason to rush to stores right now with a power graphics card in your rig.
And don't let nVidia's PR fool you, PhysX and CUDA work perfectly if you put your old GeForce card together with any Radeon card under Windows 7. There is a driver patch that allows PhysX under latest nVidia driver, I've played Mirror's Edge and Batman with full PhysX and graphics maxed on my 4870x2 thanks to a little 9600GT taking care of PhysX.
So 3D vision is the only feature that nVidia is offering today that can't be run on ATI hardware. Anyone who absolutely needs to buy a graphics card today should buy ATI, but as I said before there is no need to rush if you have a powerful graphics card from the old generation

I have some money burning my pocket and itching to get new hardware now. If I had the 4870 / GTX 260 I would have buy the HD 5870 right a way, there is big performance improvement with the HD 5870.
Some people have the card since September 23, who knows how long the wait for the Fermi is going to be also for some people the price for the HD 5870 might be the max what they're willing to spend for the Graphic card.
If the Fermi is much faster, which I believe it should, it will also cost much more.
In my case the HD 5870 isn't much faster than my HD 4870 X2, that is the reason I'm waiting for the dual GPU edition.
If Fermi is available at the same time, I will compare and buy the best card, but I will not wait for the Fermi if much later.
Now if the rumors about the Lucid Hydra 200 (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=139162) are true, I can get card from both vendors. :)

/says the guy with a 4870x2. LOL.
Well I went from a 280GTX to a HD5870 and my results have been great, this card smokes my 280GTX.

The Nvidia card will be DX11?

Well, if nVidia show a card available to retail within the next 14 days, then yes, I will wait. But, tbh, the 58's are available now and the cash is available now, so.... what do you think? :angel2:

sell it while its still worth 200 bones. Come next year you will be lucky to get $125 for it.

I'm actually waiting to find a deal on a P45 mobo and used 4890 so I can get both for under $300. It's a bit harder to find this sort of deal since I live in Canada.

Of course the 5870 smokes the GTX 280, but I was talking about having a 4870x2 (like me) or a GTX 295 (or a pair of 4870s / GTX 280s). There is no need to upgrade with those cards. Once the 5870x2 is released... well we will see :D
I couldn't wait any longer, finally placed an order for my first ATI card...ever! For the price/perfomance, Ive gone with a HD5850, also ordered a Samsung P2450H 24" monitor, and an Intel Q9550. can't wait, should arrive Thursday/Friday :)

I'm interested to see what AMD does with their 5890 card. I'm guessing the specs will be very similar to the 5870 but with a 512bit bus. That'd really make things interesting once the fermi launches and all.

They can't really change things like that with a refresh. That would require a complete redesign of the whole card and GPU.
It'll just have higher clocks.

With GDDR5 the bandwidths are so high, I don't know if the card needs a 512bit bus does it?
@ Captn
Higher clocks for certain, especially considering how cool the 5870's are running. It could be an indication of both how low the vcore is relative to the chips max, and how efficient the new style stock coolers have become. I hope we see a drastic increase in clockspeed for the 5890 2GB card.

Definitely going to wait for nV's next cards :)
