When you say "to my HD" to you mean, hard drive or high definition? :o

if you want to rip them, then grab the tape and start pulling.
That's funny :) No not RIP them. I want to copy them and put them in my digital movie collection. On my hard drive.
I guess I'll need a video capture card?
Would this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815100120&cm_re=video_capture_card-_-15-100-120-_-Product) do?
Or even a USB model?

You have the right idea, but IMO you're better off just downloading torrents of whatever movies you want to convert to digital. It will probably be better quality and take less time. Wouldn't bother my conscience any if you already own a legal copy.

Thanks, yeah that is an easier way to go maybe. But I do have some things on VHS like my wedding and other family and personal stuff I'd like to digitize. So I do need some kind of hardware.

Pirating is pirating. As much as I love some of my VHS movies, I fully intend to purchase them on Blu-Ray. It's only fair to the actors and studios IMO.
If that means I have to wait till I have the spare cash to purchase them, then I wait. Not really that big of a deal.

buy decent capture card, don't buy tuner card
i have Canopus advc 1394, great card. best thing about it doesn't require any drivers. all is build in OS. but it is discontinued.
this is amazing piece of tech

If you have home movies on VHS you would just record them on your DVD recorder then iso them
I guess the end result would be pretty poor though?
I've seen some Canopus devices on the egg. This (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814144214) one in particular. It's more $$$ but seems to have a large fan base. Just need to know if it will work with Win7 x64.

what software did you use?
i have internal version, and the results are the best you can get with captured picture from analog sources (VHS)
I tried Nero9, Creative 2010, and the bundled Neo3 software. All gave me the same result.

Comeon no one in their right mind really wants to watch that stuff. Just download a Stalone film and tell your wife your kid must've written over the wedding tape.
That aside, the best option is to hook up AV outputs to a DVR card. I'm assuming that's how torrent people do it.
Though this is sacrosanct to a true nerd, here's a PCWorld guide: http://www.pcworld.com/article/116032/stepbystep_convert_your_pc_into_a_digital_video_re corder.html

To me downloading an MP3 of a song when you already have a copy of the CD is no different than ripping the CD yourself. I've done this a lot of times for some old CD's I've had that got scratched up because I loaned them to some asshole.
And I could be wrong here but I think the actors are paid on a commission basis, e.g. they get paid so much just to shoot the movie. Whatever money the studios make after that doesn't go to them. It's not like record labels who pay them royalties based on what sells.

"Serenity", I think they knew it would make the money on the DVD sales, Otherwise they wouldn't have made it.
Maybe its a rare example.
