I know after months of usage Vista grows in size tremendously. But my fresh install of Ultimate 64 before SP1 came to 21GB !!! It's now at 27 before the compcln that I am about to do. This is with system restore off, and hibernation files deleted already.
This is not right. When I installed Vista32 originally it was only 10-12GB and grew to 15GB after a year and a half. How in the hell can a fresh install of 64bit be over 20GB?

Interesting topic.
I installed Windows 7 Home Premium on VMWare Workstation 7 on Wednesday and now I checked the fresh installed Windows folder size is 10.4GB. Then after downloaded, created restore point and installed 9 updates from Windows Update, the size grow to 10.7GB. I went to System in Control Panel and clicked System Protection then clicked Configure and noticed the current restore usage was 370MB and 3% max usage, I deleted it, turned off restore and checked Windows folder size is still 10.7GB but it still the same size after restarted VMWare. :headexplode:
Well Windows folder is grow in size everyday, I checked my desktop PC's Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Windows folder size is now 15.2GB after 3 months and my restore usage is now 135.72GB.

I'd like to think it was that easy crainger, but nothing except the O/S and the most basic of programs had been installed(firefox, email, anitvirus). Nope, it's just a double sized install for some odd reason. There were over 80 important updates before I was even able to see SP1 from within Win Update, but they were nowhere near even 1GB total, including SP1(SP1 is tiny through WU).
It isn't really a problem seeing as the drive is a 640GB, but I still want to know why it is twice what it should be.

Remember as it updates it save the old data so you can uninstall the updates as you see fit. Same for SP1 everything is saved incase you need to roll back. This happens regardless if system restore is on or off.

Negative.
vsp1cln.exe removes install files for SP1
compcln.exe removes install files for SP2
Both run from the Command window, they make reverting back impossible. Updates don't account for 10-15GB extra...even if you installed them 10 times.

even if you run those commands, certain files stay, and old files are not removed from C:\Windows\winsxs folder.
here you can find single file in multiple diffrent versions, this is done for compability reasons.
same will happen with Win7 in future, when SP1 gets released this folder will GROW.
don't forget about this 'shadowcopy' business as well.
