Damn, if fermi can only release in may then it looks like i may have to go ATI for my next upgrade. Ive never really been keen on ATI. :(

Umm interesting the 5870 xtx is coming out Q1 2010 :P. I wonder what those cards are clocked at. http://alienbabeltech.com/main/?p=12931

XTX? Pretty sure they won't go down that confusing naming path again, just call it the 5890. I was half expecting them to make that move. It's looking like they could have a 5890 with 1GHz/5GHz clocks and perhaps 2GB memory ready to face Fermi.

1ghz was easy to achieve with the 5870 that I owned so I know there is room for improvement.

I really don't understand why some people feel so obligated to upgrade their GPU, that they feel they "will HAVE to go with an ATI card".

LMAO...why? There really isn't much, gamingwise, out there to prompt people to feel the impulse to upgrade so badly they will "settle" for something they really don't want. What is it...DX11? Really? :udawg:

I don't begrudge anyone that wants the latest and greatest and feels the need to swing their epeen around, but for so many to say they are disappointed and as a result will HAVE to go ATI because of a 2-3 month extension on a release date? :screwy:

Afterall, it's just a GPU. It's a plug-in card for a system that could benefit from more GPU horsepower. It's not like there is a new "Crysis" that demands the horsepower or that the GTX285/295 and ATI 5870/4870x2 just aren't enough. Given a fast, quad CPU, any one of those cards are plenty fast and will be for at least another 3-6 months.

I agree, the HD 5870 is a very nice card but I quickly realized that replacing my overclocked GTX 275 so soon was a very big mistake considering the fact that it plays all current games just fine.

Im glad I sold the HD 5870 during the shortage because I made a nice profit on a used video card.

So for now my trusty GTX 275 is plenty enough till probably next summer. :) For people who are still gaming on a 8800GTX who are itching for an upgrade I can understand, but for those with already high end GPU's such as GTX 275-285 or 4870 X2 you would be better off to save your money for the time being.

well my last upgrade was because of a new monitor, and my old card couldn't very well at 1080p. I don't see a real compelling reason to upgrade again in the short term....but it's always interesting to see what's coming out because I will have to upgrade again eventually (probably not in the next 6 months though)

Well there is one advantage that would easily justify the upgrade though...Triple monitor gaming anyone?

Even 24" LCD's are fairly cheap these days, coming well under 300$ for each one,or even 200$ for slightly smaller 22" models, and if you're shopping carefully, you can find samsung models that have very thin bezels,so it makes for less noticable borders between each panel, and i'm sure that playing at 4950*1050(22" LCD panels),or even 5720*1200 resolution(24" panels),will give the video card quite a decent workout, even with current games...

Imagine Call of duty, modern warfare 2,playing online, using 3 panels and having not far off 150 degree field of view, rather than the usual 90 degree one with a single panel...Immersive?,oh hell yeah :D

I'm curious, why is that? I can't think of a single Nvidia GPU card that can match a HD 5870 in allround performance, or power consumption. However, I did read AMD still has some work to do regarding drivers.

I see you in your sig you have 2 HD 5870's. Wow!

Large margin is 50-75% advantage. 5870 to GTX285 right now is at around 30-35%, An advantage non the less, but far from Large Margin. Compared to a 4870/90 sure, GTX285, not.

Apparently the 9.12 drivers is going to have a big performance boost.

Bad and good.

Bad that it is delayed. That elongates the timeline to tweak with better drivers or for retailers to introduce better aftermarket designs.

Good because it will give me a few more months to save and drop the coin on a better card (whichever one that is) sometime in the Spring.
