Nvidia Corp.’s chief executive officer said during quarterly conference call with financial analysts that the company would only ramp up production of its next-generation flagship Fermi-G300 graphics processing unit in the company’s first quarter of fiscal year 2011, which means January – April timeframe.

“Next year it is going to be an interesting first quarter because, in fact, we will need more wafers than ever in Q1. The reason for that is because – and I mean more 40nm wafers than ever in Q1 –we are […] fully ramping Fermi for three different product lines: GeForce, Quadro and Tesla,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, chief executive officer of Nvidia, in the conference call with financial analysts.

Nvidia’s first quarter of fiscal year 2011 begins on the 26th of January and ends on the 26th of April, 2010. Therefore, the claim by Mr. Huang means that Nvidia will only be able to start commercial shipments its next-generation graphics cards based on Fermi architecture in calendar 2010, not in calendar 2009, as the company promised originally.

oh well, still hoping to see performnace figures this year

Doesn't really surprise me. Even if the GT300 was ready, there are now big delays from TSMC with there 40nm process. Even if Nvidia wanted to get them out to stores, they couldn't. Even ATI by all accounts are suffering from this.

Bad news, I would have liked to see Fermi on the shops this year. If ATI could put more cards on the shops this Christmas would be totally red

Guess Charlie and Kyle were right then!:p
Anyway this is bad news! :(

Maybe NV was B.S.ing and went back to the drawing board at ati's launch and are continuing to B.S. to prevent ATI's dual chip launch before christmas.

Just my B.S. thought of the day.

Maybe but ATI is also have problems getting the 40nm chips because of yield issues.

This is not good....I really wanted to see some new nV cards this year.....both to gauge bang for the buck but also to help drive down the cost and increase availability of the new ATi cards.

Dam...i really wanted atleast some kinda info on the card out/benchmarks etc...just to see if the 5870 is the better money choice to go for.

Wow. I'm really disappointed. It has been a long wait, and now the wait seems to be prolonged drastically and endlessly...:(

Last year's rumors of ATI's demise were grossly exaggerated.

Man, if the gt300 keeps on getting delayed like this might as well wait until the next generation ATI card to come out next year before buying a new graphics card :P

It hasn't really been delayed, because there has been no official launch date given yet. It would be nice to hear something though.

<dissapointment>

As long as it gets released before Duke Nukem Forever, I guess it will be fine ¬¬

the more I think about it I doubt if they'll even release any sort of benchmarks this year. ATI isn't able to produce significant quantities of 5XXX so what would be the point in releasing any kind of teaser information about performance? so they don't lose market share to a product only available in limited quantities?

OTOH if the 5XXX cards were readily available I think Nvidia would allow some kind of "performance previews" to be published to hurt sales of 5XXX. as it is there's really no driving force to cause them to do that :(

Keep in mind that the limited quantities for HD5800 cards are due to the huge demand and the fact that TSMC is only getting 40% yeilds on their 40nm process, and those low yeilds will last till the end of the year, but most importantly,Fermi also uses the same 40nm process from TSMC.

So that's:

Fermi(and all variations,tesla,quadro,etc)
HD5870.
HD5850.
HD5770.
HD5750.
HD5950.
HD5970.
GT 210.
GT 220.

All these cards using GPU's with that 40nm process, and TSMC getting only 40% yeilds for now....Not good for volume availability.

Theoretically ATI should be getting better yeilds than NV due to smaller die size. Then there's the various chips with disabled shader clusters.

This is bad news for everyone right now. Given TSMC's problems with 40nm I can't see them doing too much better with 28nm in a years time. Hopefully GF has better luck.

<40nm certainly won't get any easier. things seem to be getting more difficult as lithography approaches nanoscale.

perhaps this could be a big advantage for Intel with Larrabee and their renowned fabs.

True, the smaller dies help increase the relative amount of chips they get per wafer, but 60% of that wafer is getting trashed just the same,so imagine how many dies they'd get if yeilds were 80~90% instead.

This obviously affects fermi even more if the chip is packing 3 billion transistors at 40nm,since it's probably around the same ballpark size as the current GT200 made at 55nm(470mm^ i think?).....

It has at least 850 million extra transistors over Cypress 2.15 billion transistor budget,so about 40% more transistors at least, and the Cypress die is 334mm^ and adding the same 40% makes the GT300 die about 467mm^ in size....It's not meant to be precise since other considerations come into it,but it's a rough estimate.

So I'm decided, I don't need to wait more time, I'll get a 5870 (there is a Spanish shop that has them in stock). I have been very happy with my 4870x2, but multiGPU profiles have taken a month or more in some games and I will go single GPU this time. The 5870 draws less than half the power of my 4870x2, it's faster in games where multiGPU does not scale well and I will get Dirt 2 for free. Oh and my 4870x2 will sell well on ebay.

This will be my second year in a row with ATI, if it goes as well as the first I will be a happy gamer

It should do. The 5870 is the best single GPU card by a large margin.

I remember the 6800 Ultra Paper launch it wasnt available after 4 or 5 month in Europe after Paper launch :-/ but performance nummbers !
