Hello,

Can someone with an NV35 or/and NV30 download the demo made by humus at http://esprit.campus.luth.se/~humus/ about the mandelbrot set which uses fp24 and report the results please ?

Note: There are two versions one in directx 9 and one in Opengl. I am talking here about the opengl version.

According to the french site http://www.hardware.fr/html/news/?date=30-05-2003#5805, the results obtained by a 5600U ( 38 fps) are significantly lower than those obtained by the 9600U ( 59 fps) !

In directx 9, it is a real disaster ! : 5600 ( 6 fps) vs 9600U (28 fps)

I would like to know what is the floating point performance of the nv35 versus nv30 on this particular program.

Thanks a lot !

PS : I think i should change my nickname if NV30 is below 9600U

:)

the demo doesnt work on my fx5800 using 44.03 driver. it just shows blank screen. its very worrying even 9600pro may beat fx5800U in fp24 benchies, but then my fx5800 has yet to disspoint me in real games performance like it would in dx9 shader benchies. :)

as i understand it, the demo won't run well on Nvidia cards because the demo (while in Open GL) uses the ARB path to render the scene. Nvidia's cards don't like the ARB path, and would rather use the proprietary paths that is optimized for the Nvidia cards. Just thought you should know.

Thanks for the answer, but it's very strange that it doesn't work on an fx5800. The french site hardware.fr make it run on the 5600. !

as strange as it can be, 3 out of 5 demo of humus' i have tried dont work on my fx5800, this is the third that doesnt work, it didnt surprise me honestly.

actually its 3 out of 4, and the one that actually *works* doesnt work flawlessly either, it doesnt show the fps counter unless i run the exe strict within the downloaded zip file, which is eletro.zip.

the glow.exe didnt glow, humus then made an revision tried and fixed it but it turned out not fixing anything but dropped my already slow framerate down to 5fps from 30-40fps, strange? yeah.

5800 Ultra (default clocks) and 44.65 drivers ....

DX9.0a - 58 fps
OpenGL 1.4 - 110 fps

and 570/1120 (gpu/mem) clocks ....

DX9.0a - 72 fps
OpenGL 1.4 - 131 fps

That's really interesting ! roughly twice as fast as the radeon 9600U on a PIV 2.8 GHz. [from hardware.fr]

On what PC do you run the demo ?

Thanks !

i just installed the 44.65 driver, still blank screen, strange....

Of course the obvious question is, what precision is being used with these drivers and this particular card....

ARB_fragment_program uses maximize precision without GL hint control set. Humus OpenGL Mandelbrot does not set the precision hint anywhere. So, NV3x = FP32 and R3x0 = FP24.

Sample image of FP32 vs FP24 (Humus Mandelbrot with OpenGL set) .... HERE! (http://www.skenegroup.net/mandel/m2.jpg)
