View Full Version : What drivers are best for Fallout 3?

It's so irritating that when Nvidia updates drivers, they seem to break a game for every one they fix. Fallout 3 used to run beautifully for me. Now with the 191.07, Fallout 3 runs like utter crap. I forget now which drivers it ran smooth with.

So which drivers do you guys remember that runs this game smooth? Perferably WHQL.

186s run it great, I don't think any WHQLs after that do.

Yep - stay away from the 19x.xx drivers for Fallout 3. Nekro recommends the 186.77's in his sig for playing Fallout 3.

I've gone back to 187.62, and already noticed improved performance in all my games. :) After I installed them, I installed the SLi update #3 for my 9600GT SLi and I was ready to go.

But for what it's worth, I think people with single cards are getting affected the most. It doesn't seem to affect anyone using some form of SLi setup. Those using SLi without the same card are also affected. I never really had horrible performance with any of the 19x series of drivers, but I'm just getting better performance with the 187's.

Yep, 186.18's run it perfectly. I haven't updated them in a long time. Even when I reloaded with Windows 7 RTM, I put those back on. I just use those with the latest PhysX.

MW2, WoW and Dragon Age work great with them, too.

I was hoping to move to a 19x.xx set, but they have all been crap.

I'm using 186.18 also. After fooling around with various 19x.xx sets I went back and they feel more solid than any of the newer ones.

Only reason why I can't use the 186.18 is because i get a green flickering tint on Mirror's Edge. :( Dragon Age also had some weird flickering issues with them as well.

Strange, I don't have any issues with Dragon Age. I don't have Mirror's Edge.

I hadn't played Fallout 3 for a little while. I was reading all the comments about it running like crap and I was going, "dunno what they are taking about, it's running like butter here". Meanwhile I had updated drivers a few times and lost track cause you don't play every game you have with every driver so it's easy to forget which one works best with which game. Anyway, I went and played Fallout 3 again with the latest 191.07 WHQL driver and was pretty astounded how bad Fallout 3 ran, stutters, pauses, crashes, etc. I was like, "what the hell is this". Makes a guy rather bummed at Nvidia cause they can't seem to get their **** together. A game plays fine, don't play it for awhile and then play it later with updated drivers and it then runs like crap. Makes one really hesitant to want to try newer drivers.

One thing I did notice was Bioshock runs like butter with the 191.07. Probably the way it will go now is I'll install the 186.18, Fallout 3 will run good again, and then Bioshock will run like crap. :(

Strange, I don't have any issues with Dragon Age. I don't have Mirror's Edge.

It's with SLi setups only. ;)

Do the old drivers fix the strange texture filtering effect where distant textures are pixelated as if no filtering is applied?

Yah, Fallout 3 has HDR stutter and flicker with SLI setups with any 19x.xx drivers. I'm replaying F3 with all DLC and had to go back. All good now.

I hear the Catalyst 9.11 drivers run this game perfectly. Try those.
