View Full Version : ATI R350 by spring or even before?

What are the chances of ATI releasing an R350 sometime after Radeon 9700, around spring 2003 or before?
This hypothetical R350 would not be a cut down R300 like the Radeon 9000 is compared to the Radeon 8500. No, the R350 would be a souped up R300, much in the same way that nV GeForce2 GTS was over the original GeForce256.
R350 would be, if I had my way, a .13 micron part with 8 pipes (like R300) but two TMUs per pipe, instead of R300's single TMU per pipe. Higher clock speed in excess of 400 Mhz (.13 R300 might hit 400 Mhz anyway) Additional features and optimizations would also be present in any R350. Especially 8x FSAA instead of just 6x.
Also, R350 would follow the .15 R300/R9700 and the .13 R300
Just wishful thinking, or close to what ATI has on their roadmap?

Well, you can call the last part about the .13 R300 wishful thinking, cuz the ceo already said the weren't gonna do a simple shrink, and that the next chip would be a .13 r350

yeah right and guess what? i do not expect that chip before second quarter 2003.

It would also mean that the R300 had a very short life time. The only reason not to milk the early adopters for as long as possible would be if nVidias response is substantially better.
Though there are quite a few reports of power supply problems surfacing with the R300, and a number of MBs don't seem to be too happy with it. Most likely these are down to AGP power supply problems and overstressed power supplies. Though some people are using 300W+ PSs and still can't get the card to work. And that might mean there is a refresh part waiting to happen once ATi can get to grips with .13u, which will take some time.
I'm more than happy to wait for a version with lower power consumption and slightly maturer drivers.

Rumour I heard was this:
.15 micron R350 to be released around NV30
.13 micron RV350 to be released a bit later

Got any links for that?

There are plenty more in other forums.
Some may be down to immature drivers, some may be down to human error. But a few are due to hardware incompatabilities and the excessive power consumption of the R300. At least ATi are looking into the PSs that don't work with the R300.

*Uh... I have a 550 W PSU... gimme a R9700 to test it*
hmm 300 £ to spend on it... i wish I had... however better wait, I am really spoiled. Can't wait for that NV30 that could be a next step up in itself. I'd better be because if it is I have a feeling we will have R350 and NV35 by next Christmas. And than R300 might be just around 100£ at most £150. And Doom III ---- uuuuuh

Excessive power consumption for R9700, or lousy PSU's that do not have the output that is labled on their side
Since new PSU's seem to "fix" the PSU problems, my thoughts are w/ mis-labled PSU's.
As far as any MOBO incompaptabilities, it's just too soon. With all the various hardeware available, perhaps in another month or two, we'll know for sure. As of right now, I don't see ANYTHING to suggest mobo incompatabilites
just my .02:)

Well I hope all goes well for you jbirney, I haven't seen the Sparkle PS listed anywhere so you may well be in luck!!
Was the 330 in $, £, €, ♀, or ♂?

$330 US
I will have to post the URL when I get home. I have 4 PCs at home all working fine. So even if I can not fit it in the fastest one you would think one of the others will work..... I hope so ;)
