Every day I try to somehow snag a Fermi sample from one of the many companies we work with here at TweakTown. The problem is for the first time over the weekend we heard the 'M' word come out of a partners mouth in regards to the release. What's the 'M' word? March!
NVIDIA Fermi launch delayed to March 2010?
January seemed a pretty set date from most partners when it came to the release of the new NVIDIA based graphics card, the problem is though that for the first time we've now heard a February / March timeline. You can't help be feel worried that the time is slipping further and further away.
Every week that NVIDIA go past without a new high-end DX11 video card, it has to become ever so slightly faster than the HD 5870. If Fermi launched in November / December, people would've simply been happy with the green teams product coming out 5 - 10% faster than ATIs, if it comes out four to five months later though people are going to expect more performance than that though.
If you've been keep tracking of what's been going on when it comes to video cards over the past few years, you would know that something similar happened to ATI a while back. While they created a good, fast product, the delay when compared to the launch of NVIDIAs product meant that it simply lost the "WOW" factor that would've been generated it if was released earlier.
Hopefully March was only mentioned as a safety net due to the company feeling a bit stressed that NVIDIA continue to push back the release of Fermi, but either way it's a worry.

Honestly, I don't really know why are you all so surprised... March was what the first rumors pointed to, although (of course) I also want a Fermi card like every person waiting for it, but think about it for a second... what would you prefer?
1. getting Fermi ASAP and biting the bullet for a possible FX fiasco again?
2. getting pissed off at an extreme level until March or even April and getting it right?

3. getting pissed until March or even April, then getting even more pissed when Fermi tuns into another FX fiasco

4. A 512bit GDDR5 Fermi board revision for March. ;)

Looks like a 5850/5870 is in my future then. Not waiting for March/April.

Same here, got sick of waiting so I finally settled for a HD 5870. You will not regret it, this card runs circles around my GTX 275 in certain games.

getting 5870, cannot wait that long.
Makes me happy that I got my 5850 when I had the chance for 220€. :) They're gonna get significantly more expensive come the holidays now that nvidia won't have any competing products.

I've gone ATI for the last 3 rounds now.
The last Nvidia card I had was the great 8800GTX but the GTX280 was so absurdly overpriced that I refused to let NVIDIA screw me and went with a Radeon 4870 which by comparison had a stellar price / performance ratio. Then the 4870x2 over the the GTX295 for similar reasons and finally Nvidia has missed the boat wtih the Win 7 / Dx 11 launch and the holiday market. I just couldn't wait for them and am very happy with my Crossfire 5870 solution.
Given the the 5870 debuted back in Sept, it is possible that ATI will have a refresh in response to the Fermi launch... The performance expectations for Fermi will be very high indeed...
I'm by no means a fan boy of either camp, I'll always try to spend my cash wisely and the get the best value for money. But lately between their overpricing and the Fermi launch reminding more and more of the FX fiasco... I'm very happy with ATI.

Same here. There are no games out besides crysis that can actually present any real challenge to the high end 200 series cards right now.
hell I may not even get a fermi card when they ARE out unless there's a game that actually would benefit from a top tier card.

I agree which is why I have decided to yet again sell my other HD5870.:headexplode: Yeah I know, im nuts and cant seem to make up my mind but I have played through crysis and crysis warhead with the HD 5870 so many times that the fun factor is gone. All other games such as Batman, RE5, Ghostbusters, COJ2 etc.... either run just as good with my GTX 275 or some even better with the GTX 275.
One thing that annoyed me is that in RE5 some of the cut scenes are blacked out with the HD5870, I guess its a driver issue. Put my GTX 275 back in and everything was perfectly fine during cut scenes.
I have sold enough HD5870's on ebay and made such a profit that by the time I am ready to buy a new card I should easily have enough extra $$$ to pay for it.

Same goes for me, I can wait until Fermi is out, and taking into account I've just sold my good ol' 9800GT, put 20 more euros and got a GTX 260 for 104 additional cores, I have enough time to see if Fermi delivers good or I need to wait the refresh ^_^

Fuad seems to agree with the March date
http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/16685/1/
In January, Nvidia should have the final samples and a limited number of Fermi Geforce GT300 chips, but the launch might take place later.
If pushed, Nvidia might launch Fermi Geforce in late January as the final chips should be there by then, but real volume shipments should start towards end of Q1 2010.
The most realistic availability date is March 2010, and again only if everything goes right. Judging by our previous information, Nvidia delayed its plans by more than one, if not two quarters.
This is rather unpleasant for Nvidia and the only thing that really keeps Nvidia sane is the fact that ATI also suffers from massive shortages of its 40nm RV870 based chips.
hopefully that means we will at least see benchmarks in January
This wont help :( even if Fermi does come it will be just like the high end 5xxxx's :headexplode:
I was going to get a couple of Fermi's or ATi's refresh, which ever is better.

loving my gtx295 which is getting quite old for a video card now, but is still pretty much in the top bracket of cards.

This is starting to piss me off, ya know, Nvidia sure talks a mad game. Then goes back on it's word, it's like freakin jeopardy.
Ya know, at this point I hope the ATI refresh kicks the ever living crap out of germi. :headexplode: I mean cmon, not a single performance number and crazy delays. This sounds like it's gonna be another stupid flop like the 5800's, especially since the scope of the talks have been about the business side of things. Nothing about gaming, so it's going to be a big expensive paper weight.
The one thing that would be funny is if there is a loud blower on it. Then it would complete the cycle of suck.
Seriously Nv, send the people a glimmer of hope, cause it sure seems like there is none. And Larrabee better not even come close to it, cause if it does, I'll be laughin my butt off, after I come back from the store with my 5800 refresh card.
