Actually, there are even better breakthroughs. For example, the first working transistors were a pretty pleasant surprises back then. And they certainly were a major breakthrough, both theoretically and economically. Another major breakthrough on the computing field was first integrated circuits by Texas Instruments at the sixties. Nobody dared to even imagine such a technology 20 years before these 2 main breakthroughs. And then came laser for fast networking, data storage and light sabers. :D

One reason why we don't see so big breakthroughs today is the fact that statistical and quantum mechanics took great leaps in the early 20th century at the Golden Era of physics, and the technological fruits were collected a couple of ten years later. Nowadays advanced physics goes forward with a little steps, so does technology.

The good side of things nowadays, however, is the fact that information processing is much faster than before due to computers. It means we don't have to wait 20 years to see newfound physical phenomena to be taken advantage. For now, let's hope someone (tm) will make a major breakthrough in physics soon. :)
