What's the difference between the GTX 260 and the GTX 285? I have both now and don't really much. In benchmarking maybe up to 3 frames.
CPU limited.

Definitely CPU limited.
An Opteron 185 just isn't fast enough to let either card stretch its legs.

I noticed your set-up recently and thought WTF are you doing that for? but I didnt like to say.

yea, youre cpu limited
my old Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz and 260 192SP clocked to 756/512/1200 gets around 17,500 in 06
my i7 920 and gtx 285 get that score at stock

I got a very good deal on the 285 so I bought it. I already knew that my cpu was limited. But still plays game smooth. I like the game Mirror's Edge. When playing with the GTX 260 installed and PhysX turned on in the game in some spots I only got 3 frames. Now with the GTX 285 installed and all settings set to the highest and PhysX turned in the game in those same spot I get 50 frames. What a big difference there. And mind you I play at 1920 X 1200. Even in GTA IV I get 30 frames and and settings set very high. Hopefully I can get a quad core and new board and ram. But don't know not rich.

If only more games used physx eh.

you are big time CPU limited ,you need a i7 920 or a i5 750 to show there real power. You would have to get a new CPU and motherboard and memory to see the difference. You would have to spend around $500 to see that GTX 285 full potential ,unless you can find some one selling some i5 or i7 and the rest at a good price.Even if you could find a used E8400 or a E7400 or even a E6600 and overclock them and a SLI 775 motherboard and some DDR2 1066 memory you would see a difference.
Yes upgrade your CPU and motherboard and some fast ram.

I am amazed. First off thank you all. But I never ask about the cpu, motherboard or upgrading. What I asked was simple. And none of you really answered.
So I assume your all white with black hair and short.:D

I think the only difference is the memory width, number of shader cores and MHz. Not worth the extra money, IMO. Maybe I'm wrong, so someone correct me if I am, but that's the only thing that's ever been mentioned in reviews and spec sheets.

285 is faster
How much did you pay btw?

Well your question was worded in such a way that people would assume you where wondering why your performance wasn't much better with the 285.
Look on the boxes to see the technics difference.
Answer to your question. 285 is faster. Reason why your only seeing a couple of frames difference. Your P.C. isn't fast enough to see the performace advantage.
Logical conclusion. Sell the 285 or upgrade your P.C.
Ask for help and then be a bit of an ass about it, nice.
I'm not going to answer because everyone else answered it 10x already. It's you who refuses to listen. Why don't you put a 5870 in there and get another 3 FPS while you're at it?

I was not being a ass. I a simple question. And I did finally see a difference. Like in Mirror's Edge.
I was running a GTX 260 216 card. I was getting 3 frames a sec in this one scene. I had to shut off PhysX in the game. Now I changed out the 260 and replaced it with a GTX 285 SSC. The game runs sweet and that scene does not affect my game play. I have all the settings set to the highest and PhysX on. And getting 50 frames in that scene.
But from what you guys are saying it being cpu limited. I would not of saw a increase.
Now Ii tried GTA IV and with the GTX 260 I was getting 17 frames with the setting set to the highest it would allow me. Ever since I put the GTX 285 in GTA IV with settings very high and 4X even I get 30 frames.
I did finally see a increase in some games. And the cpu didn't stop the increase.
Ask for help and then be a bit of an ass about it, nice.

If you saw any massive increases going from a 260 216 to a 285 it must have been a bug or a fluke. The 285 isn't that much faster. Probably around 15%.
And the performance increase will be far less on your system because your CPU is such a bottle neck.

I finally am going to change it. I got a deal on Q6600/abit 35-e/ 2gb 1066 ddr2. Will have in a week or so. And I will add at lease another 2 gig of ram. I will bench and see what difference there will be.
Talking about cpu limiting, how much card could a Phenom II x4 945 3Ghz running w7 with 8Gb of ram handle?

CPU heavy games will probably be CPU limited with most high end graphics cards but you shouldn't have any real performance problems unless you're really picky.
In most games the performance is comparable to a stock Core 2 Quad Q9450 @ 2.66Ghz.
Overclock that thing.
