PC Perspective Podcast #88 - NVIDIA's Fermi problems, OnLive, the Death of PC gaming and more!
http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=411
the Fermi stuff starts about 4 minutes in. they say it will not "launch" at CES (although there are still rumors from elsewhere that it will be shown in some capacity, possibly behind closed doors). Nvidia told them re: 512 or 448 shaders that their is not necessarily a direct correlation between Tesla and Geforce, and they will have 512 shader parts for Geforce and Tesla lines. when they come out is an unanswered question. the initial parts could have 448 shaders with 512 shader parts coming later, that is a possibility. they also speculate that removing ~15% of the shaders wouldn't save much power. Geforce Fermi "probably" will launch with a 512 shader part, with "probably" less performance per watt than 5870. Fermi is a very "aggressive" design monopolizing most Nvidia engineers time. Nvidia won't have anything but high-end DX11 parts for awhile, mainstream and low-end parts will be DX10.1. they think Fermi will "perform like it's supposed to."

Is that woman on that video the most rude and annoying woman ever or what! She interrupts almost every conversation and forces her opinions on every subject.
I think she made a complete fool of herself speaking about getting software developers developing for all platform including PC. I think she realised she was talking rubbish but kept going.
Some interesting Fermi talk though - even though most of it is still speculation.

So, basically, nothing we didn't already know, and no concrete numbers. Informative!

haha, oh well..
Death of PC gaming is hopefully not gonna happen, because I can not imagine playing games on super low resolution and super bad graphics...
What the PC game developers need is some ppl who want to make games because they think its fun and like to satisfy us with awesome games, and not ppl who ONLY think about money and dont want to "waste" their time making good games for PC like Infinity ward and a bunch of other companies..
Dice for the win, they actually like what they do and are proud of it.

How did these guys get a podcast....? Host seems knowledgeable but the others seem less than on the ball....
And why is that chick even on there.....man is she scary....tranny maybe?

Usually I find goth chicks to be very attractive...but I swear that ones packing a "gun" in her skirt...

Ugh, sorry but what the hell are Nvidia thinking. Their strategy this gen makes no sense to me.
You can argue that the 57xx series aren't enough to push DX11 features, but I would think at 1600x1200 and below they would be, which is the target market of such cards.
Despite that, what will Nvidia have to counter 5850? Unless the GTX 360 performs VERY poorly, ATI will have the only reasonably priced DX11 cards that are capable of using DX11 at high resolutions.
We get a little lost in our high end enthusiast world sometimes. Most PC gamers I know bought 4850's last gen (I'm talking about dozens of people) because they were the best bang for the buck solution for a long time. This time, not only is the 5850 in the same position, but it's also going to have no DX11 competition for at least 6 months?
Nvidia are crazy.

I don't think they are crazy... I think they are having problems getting Fermi working as they would like. I think they would have released it back in September as was first thought if they could have got it working. And they would have had chips for lower-spec cards by now too if that was the case.
So probably not crazy, just in a flap at the moment because their next gen chip isn't ready.

For what its worth, I think cards like the GT240 are considered main stream, not cards in the $200-$300 range. Main stream cards are basically just there to allow people to play games in systems that can't currently play any recent games. The latest features aren't really an issue with cards like that.
Nvidia will probably do as they've always done and iron out the manufacturing process and the architecture with the high end parts for quite a while before trying to build dirt cheap GPUs with the same technology.
Remember, it took them almost 6 months to release the 8600 and 8500 after the 8800 GTX and GTS were released. That means they had no mainstream or low end DX10 cards.

that's true, except this time Fermi is late. well 8800 was a little late too, but still it was the first DX10 GPU on the market. and when the ATI DX10 GPUs did arrive they weren't even as good.
with Fermi being late, GTS 350/340/330 will probably be late too, and those market segments are where the biggest volume of sales take place. assuming they come about 6 months after 380/360, that would give ATI roughly a whole year as the only one with DX11 products in the biggest markets.
I don't buy all the "NVIDIA IS D00M3D!!1" hyperbole either, but recently ATI has been improving their market share and it looks like that will continue. although I do believe that by any reasonable scenario that would still leave Nvidia with a big lead, just a smaller one.
