Thought you guys might find this test of use.
I tested my quad core Q8200 last week and got from memory 12000 ish marks.
I have just tested my dual core cpu E8400 and got 19295 3DMarks. Huge difference... eh

See my sig for rest of system
3DMark Score 19295 3DMarks N/A

My gpu is a Zotac GTX260

FYI - An over clocked E8400 or E8500 will hold it's own or better against many of the C2Qs.

Quite a few reviews out there back this up.

Thanks Grey, I've been trawling round the hardware sites most of this evening looking for comparisons, reviews etc.
The difference comes as a real surprise to me though.

It did me too.

I still want a nice Quad setup, just not as much in a hurry as I used to be after I got my E8500. Still have my E8400 too. :)

I'm not sure I'm doing the right either. I managed to sell the q8200 and the corsair ram tonight , the rest(E8400 and asus board go Tuesday. Don't think it will matter what i get, as most of these components are raid fast anyway. The 3Dmark thing though that was mind blowing. :D
If i had a few more funds would consider getting Q9550 , but it will be out of my reach.
BTW I hope to be on board with L4D2 at the end of the month. He he Don't laugh I'm fairly crap at at games.

What quad core are you considering getting ?

I'm looking at the P2 965 if I decide to upgrade the whole platform, if not then a Q9650. They seem to be great overclockers and will handle anything I would personally hit them with, which is games only. Strictly hobby stuff, so I don't see the point of spending a lot of cash.

Fwiw, i wouldn't make decisions based on any synthetic benches. They will give you an idea of where your performance is at, but that's about it. My lil E8500 @3.8 and HD 4870 at stock clocks give me playable frame rates in Crysis at all high settings, and handle everything else just fine.

And I won't laugh at you. I accidentally killed the heck out of DDoc in L4D2 last time we played.

I did this :o in game, but in real life I was :rofl

If I recall '05 isn't multi-threaded. So it's no surprise your dual core scores higher than the quad as it's more efficient in single threaded apps.

However, 05 is hardly indicative of what direction software and games are heading. Things are becoming increasingly more parallel and multi-threaded and as such more cores will be more of a benefit in the coming years.

You'll much more appreciate a good PhII X4 over any Core2, I can promise you this. ;)

Random question: how many times can you install 3dmarkvantage? Can you install them on different PCs?
