is there any reason y they dont put it up on windows update yet?

frenchy2k1

the reason they do not put fix is usually that either the error itself is rare or that the fix is as risky as the problem. They put them for the public after longer testing. Not that it does them much good anyway, given their bug count track record...

well not always, many of these fixes will never be released, MS will wait to dump everything in SP1.

stuff that hits windows updates is usually security fixes/exploits and very common issues, everything else have to wait for SP1.

i did install few of them

KB975500 - fixed my minidv firewire transfer issue
KB975777 - made restarts faster
etc...

Slightly off topic but I figure this is a good place to post it considering the fix might just be an update/patch I'm not aware of.

When playing back music in WMP sometimes the computer will freeze. I can move the mouse, the keyboard lights are responsive, and for a few seconds I can minimize and open apps... but shortly after wards the system just hard locks and the HDD activity light is solidly light.

I've never had it happen when doing anything else- playing a video game, watching a movie, browsing the web, etc. ONLY when listening to music with WMP. Any ideas as to why this could be?

EDIT: Downloaded WinAmp to see if an alternate player would work... but absolutely hate the interface. So, I downloaded the Zune software remembering your comments regarding it in my MP3 Player thread... using it for now. I really like the software and if it works without freezing I'll never use WMP again.

glad you like it, now time for zune player ;)

as far as WMP freezing issue, it could be codec related, try removing any codec packs that you installed.

I've been using the Zune software ever since that last post. It never froze on me once, until just a few moments ago. System completely hard locked.

I'm looking through event viewer right now to see what I can find... this is really annoying. :(

I should probably just perform a fresh install; I cannot though because I have *nothing* to backup my data onto (a LOT of family pictures and videos, as well as lots of music). So I'm stuck waiting till I have enough money to purchase a larger hard drive for strictly backup purposes.

This is absolutely annoying. All I'm trying to do is listen to music. Something my system is more than capable of handling. I have no add-on codecs installed, everything is "stock". I don't use any third party plug-ins, nothing of that sort.

Only thing I found in the event viewers was 7 entries for this error:

Session "ReadyBoot" stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188

Which a google search provided this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2001347) result:

Symptom: Your Windows 7 computer may have recorded in the Microsoft Windows Kernel-EventT...Your Windows 7 computer may have recorded in the Microsoft Windows Kernel-EventTracing log, an event with EventID 3 and Level of "Error". The description reads, "Session "ReadyBoot" stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188". You may also see this error listed in the Overview and Summary page upon opening Event Viewer.

Resolution: The logging of this error will not affect the operation of your computer. Ready...The logging of this error will not affect the operation of your computer. ReadyBoot is used by the ReadyBoost service that optimizes the boot time of your computer to a minimum.

So could it be ReadyBoost crashing? And what would cause that? I'm gonna' disable ReadyBoost via msconfig and see if that solves anything.

have you tried disabling readyboost? plus is anything in your system OCed? if it is, i would try setting everything to stock

Just disabled ReadyBoost (well, superfetch as it appears those two are tied together in 7, unlike in Vista where they were seperate), and nothing is oc'd- everything is 100% stock.

I hope this works. I don't use readyboost and really don't care for SuperFetch. Didn't disable them cause I figured with an i7 920 and 4GB of RAM I wouldn't have to worry about it. :o

Just froze on me again. And this time the only thing Event Viewer shows is that the system halted unexpectedly, and a system restart occured unexpectedly. :(

Only thing common between all these freezes is I'm listening to music. That's it. Doesn't do it after hours of gaming, or after hours of watching movies, or browsing the web, or sitting idle... *only* when listening to music. :wtf:

I'm stumped. :o

getting little bit off topic in this thread, but could you list system specs, including audio components? and audio bit/hz settings.

Sure-

Core i7 920 (stock)
Intel DX58SO mobo (stock)
G.Skill DDR3 1600 RAM 2x2GB
dual eVGA 8800GTX (stock)

I'm using the optical out via the onboard RealTek HD Audio chipset, output is 16-bit and 48Khz.

Just got a BSOD. No indicator of cause in Event Viewer, BSOD claimed an uncorrectable hardware error with a code of 0x00000124 <- not exactly sure how many zeros but the last three digits were 124. And all I was doing was launching RoL:RoN. Which I played just fine not 1 hour earlier. :wtf:

if you want, send me the minidump file

files should be either in root of c, or in C:\Windows\Minidump

its the crash log

or if you want to can look through the minidump with these tools
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/default.mspx

it will not tell you how to fix it, but at least it will point you in right direction what caused it

No file in either location. It never did complete the dump- it sat there for 5 minutes with the HDD light solid on. So I did a hard boot- the hard steel-toe tip of my boot to the comptuer's face.

No, seriously though I just hard boot it. It's working okay so far... maybe the BSOD was a fluke? I hope so. :o Not using the computer for music though, just listening to the radio.

when you do get a BSOD again, let it complete the minidump, that file might hold some answers.

Yes, sir. :o :(

I figured 5 minutes was long enough- maybe I was wrong. Who knows- maybe the computer was typing me a "Dear John" letter. :(
