Outlook 2010, just an FYI

For those of you who plan on using office 2010 with gmail, you might want to know this...

When using outlook 2003/2007, if you autoconfigure, everything works just fine...

But in outlook 2010, when it autoconfigures, it sets up to use IMAP instead of POP and also creates separate pst file for each. Well, that annoyed me a bit especially since i use a single pst file located on a separate drive, so if I need to format, I wont lose all my outlook data (and theres a ton).

So when you add your accounts and want to use POP instead of IMAP, you'll need to manually configure.

But who wants to actually use POP with GMail? The benefit of using gmail with outlook is using IMAP so that everything you do on your computer is actually done on the gmail server. And when using IMAP, nothing important is stored in the .pst file....only the cached files that have been downloaded from the server. If you delete the .pst file everything is still on the server so when you setup your account again it is all there.....

Any mail client with IMAP support does this, including outlook express, windows mail, eudora, thunderbird, etc. I found IMAP to be a bit laggy, slow and just annoying.

That is still true with POP... Gmail itself has an option for it (leave msgs on server after download) as well as any respected mail client, including outlook. Actually, with outlook 2010 it has the ability to move messages to designated folders on the server, including deleted items and sent items - something i don't recall seeing in outlook 2007 or 2003.

In any case, its just a heads up for those who prefer POP like me.

I have used IMAP for ages, I just prefer not having to backup any local e-mail stored file. I don't use g-mail much as I have my own domain e-mail address.

I find the IMAP speed a bit better in Outlook 2010 beta, over 2007 can't think why as they can't have done much to speed it up I guess its a placebo effect.
