Cos some people say they are noisy and others say they are not - so which is true, please?

in my current rig I had an IBM 30gig 7200rpm ata100, and now I have a WD 120gig 7200rpm ata100 8meg cache. I found the WD to actually be quieter

Well I can only speak for the version I have, WD 120gig SE, its very quiet. Older wd hdd's I've owned in the past were pretty quiet as well, not as much as the newer ones though.

I can't hear a peep from them, although this Delta might have something to do with that:D

Maxtor and WD are both relatively quiet drives.:)

Thanks guys, especially Gator - you seem to have the same drive I am going for, so it looks OK. Course, knowing my luck, I will probably get a 'monday morning' model.

Maxtor drives make alot more noise than WD, especially as they get older.

Every Maxtor drive I've owned were all loud. My current WD 80Gig is quiet - I can't even hear it above my fans (and ever since I swapped over to the Abit NF7-S, I can hear all the fans in my case from well inside the damn kitchen). :p
