View Full Version : NV33 and NV36 coming soon
http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/video/display/20030708171708.html
Noticed an interesting tidbit:
Meanwhile, although NVIDIA is quite happy with its NV40 design, the graphics processor itself will be available by Christmas at earliest, we were told.
Signs of things to come?

What is NV33 supposed to be?

If the NV40 comes out at christmas then it's right on time. If anything it'll be earlier than expected, and it'll kick some butt when it arrives. I don't expect any NV3x type foobar with this design.

we have the nv36 already.........fx5600 ultra at 400/800. The nv33 is either the fx5200 ultra or maybe there will be an fx5400 ;)

The NV33 was supposed to be a DX9 compliant chip for handheld devices. Though I think there has been a change of plan with that.

I'm curious about that as well...
FX5600 Ultra(400/400) is NOT NV36. It's NV31 core. NV36 just taped out recently at IBM and is obviously not FX5600 Ultra Rev 2.

probably the fx5900 value

XGPU was called NV2A, although I do agree with you. I don't think there is a handheld part called NV33.

Yeah, if Xbox has a IGP, then that is the same thing. Been awhile since I saw a picture of the inside of an Xbox, and I'm not sure whether it has integrated or discrete graphics.

is the fx5700 gonna be as fast as the fx5800 non ultra itll replace?
NV36 isn't replacing 5800. It's replacing 5600. It's a 4x1, it will never be able to match the speed of the 4x2 of the NV30. It is also NOT 5900 Value because that uses the NV35 chip, not NV36.

so the nv33 is nothing more than a faster nv36 or fx5600? then why wouldnt the nv33 be the fx5600 ultra at 400/800?

Ermm.. because it isn't.

I read an in-depth article recently that discussed the xBox IGP using a modified NV20 core (GeForce3) instead of NV11 (nForce1) or NV17 (nForce1). I'll add the URL here if I can re-find it.
Both these articles discuss the Xbox graphics chip, as well as the rest of the console:

Might not be the ones you've read, but they're a pretty good look at the Xbox.

Because the NV31 is still the NV31, and NV33 isn't NV31. I don't think anyone really knows what NV33 is. A different codename mean it's a different chip.

whatever the nv33 is, will it beat the fx5600 ultra? does it match a fx5900 value?
It seems to be an increasing trend within the computing industry to dilute everything. Personally, i'd prefer it if there weren't 6,7,8 varients of the same GPU floating around. Surely 3 - Low end, midrange, and high end - is more than enough? Whatever happened to distinct releases, with clear performance benefits/losses over other products in the same line?
Adding 10mhz to the core doesn't justify calling it an "Ultra" or "Pro". Have a really cheap option (the 5200), a midrange option (5600) and a highend (5900) - No Ultras, no respin varients hanging around. Just a simple, straightforward product line.

Well, this whole thing becomes somewhat murky because NVIDIA themselves supposedly cancelled the gf4Ti4400 because there was no demand for it comparative to the 4200 and the 4600.
The purpose of the gfFX5200Ultra seems rather obvious to me, that is, its purpose is to build recognition for the standard gfFX5200. Same thing with the gfFX5600Ultra/non-Ultra. The average consumer may hear that the gfFX5200Ultra is pretty good, but they won't be able to make the distinction between that and the regular 5200.
And we see this again with the FC gfFX5600Ultra, which doesn't seem to be out yet, or if it is it hasn't been for long. Simple bait and switch tactics :)
