Geforce GTX 480 to be as hot as GTX 285

Higher TDP, but similar noise

We got some word that Nvidia's upcoming Fermi-based Geforce GTX 480 single GPU card should be as hot as the GTX 285. These are still preliminary results, as Nvidia still has to send out the final cards with the final coolers, but this looks like slightly better result that the GTX 480 that we saw at CES 2010.

The TDP of the GTX 480 will end up higher than on GTX 285, but with the help of a good cooler the thermals should be very close.

The noise lever should also be very comparable and the card should not end up much noisier than GTX 285. We heard numerous times that GTX 480 will end up with different cooler than the one we saw at CES 2010 and that was showed to Nvidia's loyal press at Editor Days.

All in all, you won't burn your fingers on the GTX 480, but it won't be cold either.

AFAIK GTX 285 like temperatures would put it in line with the reference HD 5870

Reassuring news. They must be going all out on the cooler though, to have a higher TDP and have it run as cool without much more noise.

yeah, I was wondering about the cooler too. this is the GTX 280 cooler (top) and GTX 285 cooler:

I'm guessing the GTX 480 cooler would have to be even more elaborate than the GTX 280 cooler

Uhh no. I happen to own both and the GTX 285 runs quite a bit hotter, not has hot as the GTX 280 did, which I also own, but still way hotter than the 5870.

I haven't owned a GTX 2xx GPU so no comment on that, but my 5870 has definitely run cooler than any video card I've had in the last few years (4870x2, 9800GT, 6800GT [Gainward dual slot twin fan]). It's been quieter than all but the Gainward 6800GT too, but that's a given, "aftermarket" twin fan setups are always quiet.

I could only compare numbers I got from various online reviews, which did show quite a bit of variance but were all roughly "in line" by my estimation

Good News!!

Well... at least if they end being true...

That's great news!

The 285 is quite cool in contrast to the 280... My friend's peaks at 105 C while playing Crysis and I've only hit at the max 91 C during the heaviest of testing.

I'd be happy with only 285 temps. That's nothing to be worried about

I'm pretty sure Anand tested them outside a case ;)

I donno how they tested, but it was retarded. I have never seen mine above 40C. Maybe they are testing exhast air or something? My GTX 285 will hover in the 60-65C range. After playing a graphics heavy game my 5870 will be at about 38C.

5850 has never seen 60'C......maybe they were drunk.....

not every chip that comes off the line is going to be perfectly identical. just like some will reach higher clock speeds or have defective units, some will leak more current and run hotter, especially with a relatively new process. you can't reach any hard conclusions until you see several different samples tested side by side under the same conditions anyway.

That anandtech picture, its right there in the link why the 5870 is so much higher in load. It has hardware vrm overload protection and 'software'(known power viruses as ati terms it) runs at highest speed before overload while on all other cards, the drivers is downclocking the gpu to prevent failure.

The graph next is load using a game.
