NV30 screens are NOT fake

Comon...if these things really were rendered with an NV30, or Used CG surely there would be no harm in Nvidia saying something about it. Saying they were infact rendered using any of Nvidias tech would not bust any kind of NDA.

Some of those pics on Exluna have been there since 2001..yet all of a sudden they are shots from Nvidias latest endeavor? Riiiiight...:rolleyes:

Probably most if not all of them I would bet.

What better way to test your new language and hardware and drivers than by running your new company's library of renderings through your product.

Although, all we have seen is a screen shot of an image that was supposedly rendered using Cg on a Nv30. We think.

Oh, and it would be quite easy to break the NDA if you weren't carefull.

Just look how the supposed rendering of an image is generating web pages full of speculation and flame wars.

if you really read the Sharky Extreme article it doesn't say that NV30 was used to render those images. Since one of the main features of the NV3x architecture is its ability to display cinematic graphics in real-time, we've compiled a few images that demonstrate many of the advanced features.

pay careful attention to the words used. although for some of the images it seems like a statement is being made like "NV30 created this," never is it explicitly stated that this is true.

the only statement that even comes close is thisThe next image is of a stylish motor-cycle, and has been developed using Cg pixel and vertex shader programs. This follows along with the NVIDIA-stated goal of Cg to save time and effort while still producing exceptional image quality.

and what does that tell us? that the NV30 can do this? that a GF4 can do this, and the NV30 can do it faster? it doesn't clarify much at all. until i see an explicit statement that these were made with an NV30 in real time...

All those images are very easily renderable on DX9 class hardware. I doubt very much whether anything that doesn't support at least 64bit colour will even approach the quality shown in them.

But I also doubt if any of them are real time renders. Some of the methods required to produce such quality images, such a path tracing etc., will still require an enormous number of cpu cycles. I can image the NV3x could render them faster through the use of some pretty advanced shader code but it would still be offline rendering.

Also, IMO, the images (though they look nice) could have been rendered on an R300 just as easily as an NV3x. Just maybe not as quickly, and remember quickly is a relative term here - it may have been tens of minutes.

We need to know some real hardcore stuff about the NV3x architecture, not what it's capable of offline. But what it can do in real time. How wide is the memory bus, 128bits or 256bits, how many cycles get eaten by FSAA or Anisotropic filtering. What improvments have they made to the Z-Occlusion code and how well does the chip utilise the bandwidth available? Thos are the kinds of things I want to know. And I want to know NOW...

That is true..but the 3rd page that has the screens on it was titled "Nv30 Screenshots and Eye Candy" (or something like that)...unfortunately they have removed this page from their article..hmmmm..so I cant check what the exact title was..but it was very misleading to say the least.

Funny that they removed it though, perhaps they also fail to see what these pics really have to do with Nvidia or Nv30 , outside of the Exluna purchase?

I saw the pics on the (now missing) third page yesterday, and there were a couple extra beyond the ones on the nVNews front page. As far as to whether these were generated on the nV30 or not, there's a very good point someone made- I could render these on my GF4, though it wouldn't be using my hardware nor in realtime, if I had the software. ;)

(So the nV30 screenshots could very well be REAL, without saying much at all about the hardware's capabilities)

Anyone who thinks an NV30 was even near the machine that rendered those pics is simply deluding themselves.

The pics are identical to those on exluna's site. Killeroo uses path tracing, which simply isn't possible in anything approaching real time.

Now, you might argue that they were rendered on the NV30, just not in real time. With the NV30 just now completing tape-out, and the fact that some of these images are from early this year and evel last year, that is simply impossible.

It was bad leaked information, nothing else. Perhaps nVIDIA intends on using these images as a demo, much like ATi's animusic demo, but they haven't done that yet, and the images posted were software renders done off-line months ago.
