As of today, a new version of Steam is available through a public opt-in beta, open to all Steam users. This Steam update provides several major upgrades to the platform's core functionality. We've overhauled the Steam user interface to enhance the way you already buy and play games, adding more info about the things that matter getting games, playing them with friends, and staying current in the gaming world.

If you already have Steam installed on your computer, you can take part in the beta by clicking this link and then selecting "2010 UI Update" under Beta Participation. If you don't have Steam installed, download it today.

Following is a preview of the beta read on to see what's new. When you're done reading, try out the beta, then head on over to the forums to let us know what you think.

So far, I'm liking it a lot.

did they finally implement better support for non-steam games?

I dig it. It appears to have an issue with systems with large fonts though. That's funny, just yesterday I was thinking to myself that Steam could use a new UI or at least an alternate one for my media PC.

can only one full shots?

Nope, the changes are mainly cosmetic.

I tried it, I like it, but there's bugs, most options are invisible, I can't actually see what option is being highlighted under some categories, there's just no names, no text appearing, just a blue highlight over an empty area where it would normally be written something like "settings" or "exit Steam". I'll wait until the bugs are fixed (obviously there are some, it's a Beta), then I'll certainly use it.

None of those problems here.

well, it is slightly better at least now they are organized in alphabetical order.

this is basically what i would want them to do.

You're lucky, looks like I'm not alone with that problem: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1158079

I like it thus far :)

Keep in mind this is a beta and if you have problems with it, bugs or whatever, just switch from beta to non-beta :)

Not bad, but it could look a little better. Not really feeling the new library look but oh well.

More like you and they are unlucky, forums are FAR from a sample of the whole, especially when it comes to tech issues.

As for the update I like it... seems ok, nothing special. I kind of liked the minimalist design, honestly, but this one seems slick. I might use it as a non-steam game launcher now.

Don't do this if you don't want to reinstall MW:2.

Still not over with your dissatisfaction with Steam?

Actually, they no longer use IE to render anything, it's now using webkit.

More than just cosmetic.

It makes me feel like I'm using an old Zune.

If they are using webkit then they have done the impossible, making it a slow POS.

It's a Beta. Say it with me. Beta. The idea/purpose of this is to test it and weed out the problems.
