According to our info 2D performance, or to be precise a lack thereof on AMD's HD 5000 series cards should be fixed with the upcoming ATI Catalyst 10.4 drivers and that the problem is actually driver based.

You may already heard that HD 5000 series has serious problems when it comes to 2D power, and that even some integrated solutions are doing much better than, for example a $300 HD 5870 card. The problem is being fixed and AMD promises that the fix should come with a Catalyst 10.4 driver.

You can check out the tomshardware.com article here (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/2d-windows-gdi,2539.html).

Didn't even know about the 2D problem. Maybe this is why the 5000-series scores so low on WEI?

What about DXVA, MPCHT compatibitly...? Problems like that were the reason I got rid of the ATI card.

Good to see they're working on all fronts. It's still way too slow but at least there is progress. Maybe I'll keep my next ATI card, in a year or so ;)

Why aren't you using madVR (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=146228) + CoreAVC? :) Looks much better than any other combination I've tried thus far. :)

2d performance on my 5870 is slow, my wife even says my computer playing her games (all 2d) are slower than on her lower powered computer. It will be nice when they speed up.

What exactly is this problem anyway? I don't think I've ever seen it. Like, what kind of 2D stuff is slowed?

Everything, it isn't significant, but it isn't speedy either.
