View Full Version : Leap of faith - Sapphire 5970 incoming

So Newegg finally has some 5970's in stock it seems, so I'm taking a leap of faith and trying ATi again. The last time I had an ATi card was the 9800 Pro, and I was never satisfied with that card. It just never ran as well as my buddy's 5800 Ultra - which still does not make sense.

I was thinking of buying a second 280 GTX, but since the 5970 is faster than SLI'd 280 GTX's, I figured I'd give it a go.

9800 Pro slower than a 5800Ultra? Something was *definitely* wrong.

Anyhow, you should be very pleased. :)

For what it's worth, the Catalyst Control Center software is MUCH better than when it was. Ever since they got rid of the bulky UI, it feels much nicer.

PhysX was a cinch to set up, and ran extremely well. That's going to be one beast up a setup, too! Wish I had that kind of money for a videocard. :p Keep us updated!

Enjoy!

I had a Radeon 9800 Pro, great card :D

My last Nvidia card was the 9800GX2 and that was micro-stuttuer hell (my 5870 CF setup has had none of this so far) and before that I had an Nvidia 8800GTX, which was fantastic...

Nvidia's price vs performance ratio in the last couple of generations has meant I've found ATI to be the best buy all round, I've been using them since the 4870, no complaints and their drivers have greatly improved!

When that 5970 arrives, don't forget to enable 'Catalyst AI'!

Very nice darkrider!

I'm still torn on what card(s) to upgrade too, but I loved my 9700pro and have had 99% problem free operation with my 4870 - I think you'll be happy with your new card. :)

Folks that decide to go Quad Crossfire make sure you have a i7 or i5 that can pass 4.0GHz. I'm leaving performance on the table with overclocked triple HD 5870 Crossfire and my current CPU. It's not horrendous and they are being held back to a degree.

Everything will be here tomorrow. I decided to go all the way and ordered an i7 930, Gigabyte GA-X58-UD3R, and 6GB of Corsair DDR3 1600 CL7. Hopefully I will have it up and running by Friday.

I'm thinking about stealing my wife's 8800GTX for Phys-x since she doesn't game any longer....

Sounds good. That 930 should do well.

I've been thinking about trying one because I'm sick of being below 4.0GHz with my old first rev 920 and now I've got cards that could use a higher clock. Yeah, it would be a gamble, like all overclocking.

Probably going to move to Win 7 too so I can hack PhysX support. I might be able to slide my old 8800GT in my rig. It's fairly flat/low profile.

Have fun building it up :)

:rofl

Good choice though. I love my 5870. It's very powerful, not too noisy, and my temps max out at 56C :)

You're not supposed to..you're supposed to be wistfully glancing at it and desiring to build it..

while knowing you CAN'T!

All I can say now is WOW. I haven't done much tweaking yet, but at stock clocks on the CPU and 5970, my vantage score went from a P14098 to a P26026. My CPU score went down, but I'm guessing it's because my Q9300 was overclocked and my i7 930 wasn't. I'll have to run it again soon, but so far I'm super impressed. The new CCC is sooo much better than the last time I had to use it.
