actually it did have advantages, but was still slower than a 9500 pro with 128 bits. If ati or nvidia makes an 8x1 with 128 bit and a 4x1 with 256 bits, wouldnt the 8x1 win by a little? another thing, why are cards with 64 bit memory bus so crappy? :confused:

The 256bit bus will come into play if the speed an't that high i still think 256bit 550MHz is good enough for a high speed core clock. Also 64bit memory has half the bandwith of 128bit, hence are crappy :D

However the Radeon 9800SE is said to be clocked at 325MHz :rolleyes: hope it's higher for a 4x1.

Since when did the r9500 have a 256bit bus? I thought the silicon had a 256bit bus, but that had to be enabled with a hack.

And how exactly would the core of the card(the only difference between the 9500 and 9700 pro - 1 resistor on the core) control the width of the actual bus? And how exactly did Ati manage to turn off the 4 pixel pipes of the R300 *and* turn off half of the 128-bit bus with one resistor?

By default, did the r9500 have a 128bit bus or not. Sheesh. How hard is it to answer one question :rolleyes: I know all about softmods and that some r9500s were actually r9700 silicon. That's not what I was questioning. You said that the r9500 has a 256bit bus, and I said it was not enabled by default. I have never heard before anyone claim that the r9500 was by default using a 256bit bus.

The old version of the Radeon 9500 had a 256bit bus and outperforms the newer 128bit bus ones but only slightly. But it did only have a 4x1 275MHz core not really much at all.

AH man i knew someone was going to say that, i'll have to look for it. I know i saw it at www.xbitlabs.com but this was going back a long time ago now.
