Did anyone get a email from asus partnering with seagate? It's an invite for may 26th to see something new on the storage front. They don't say what it is but this what they hinted at. For the registration, they are offering prizes too.

here is what they hint at:
Here’s a sneak peek:
• 20% faster than a 600GB 10K-RPM SATA drive
• 80% faster than a traditional 7200-RPM drive
• 150% faster than a traditional 5400-RPM drive
• Boots within 6 seconds of an SSD drive

here are the prizes that you can win for attending:

Attend and you may win one of three ASUS ROG G73Jh Gaming Notebook, Flip MinoHD cameras, or Seagate® FreeAgent Go™ 640GB drives.

the link for registration is a timed session otherwise I would put a link in here. If anyone has a clue or has a site with details, let us know.

First I've heard of it. Interesting hints though.

Maybe a platter drive with a big cache?

platter / ssd hybrid?

I wondered when hybrid drives would show up.

cool. hybrid drives. I remember some company trying to do this by using a ssd with a hard drive (it was like a hard drive booster) in either a internal or external box where you supplied the drives.

That kind of performance is certainly intriguing, I'm just wondering how long til they get to Aus, and how much they will cost.

unless i missed it, it doesn't mention advanced format.

Yea that momentus drive looks like a beast, I will probably raid 0 two of the drives. Especially that I can get 2 x 500gb drives for the price of a 128gb SSD, and almost equal performance. Will be nice, hopefully these drives will last long!

Hmm... reading through that review now. If the prices are right, might purchase a couple of these before too much longer. Already have a 30GB SSD on the way that'll be my boot drive. Paired with one of these for programs/data would be sweet.

Any word if desktop variants (3.5") will be released in the future?

Not sure about desktop variants- not too concerned either. 2.5" to 3.5" adapter kits aren't really expensive last I checked.

I'm really anticipating these being released. Soon as I can I'll grab one. Really excited to see how well it'll pair with my SSD once it gets here. :D

i hope this is not a new stupid trend, where they plan to cut hdd down to 2.5 in future and get rid of 3.5.

same tech in 3.5 drive would be faster, there is a reason why 2.5 inch drive with same spindle speed can't match or beat 3.5inch drive with same spindle speed.

now a 3.5inch drive wtih 7200rpm or 10,000rpm spindle with 4/8gb flash chip would be great.

This is why I'm wondering if a 3.5" variant will be available.
