GRRRRRR!!!!!! I am gonna try my best to type this without swearing at all you... people... but it will be difficult. You people know who you are. This thread is just for you. It's like a Typing FAQ, because you people annoy the... heck... out of me.

A lot. There's a lot of oranges in a box of oranges. A lot of things happened today. Do you see what I'm trying to say here? THERE'S NO SUCH WORD AS 'ALOT'. From now on, every time I see someone use 'alot' on these forums, I will refuse to agree with their point. Just for fun. To summarise: 'a lot' is TWO words.

Rouge. French for the colour red. An ugly word with a beautiful sound. However, it is most DEFINITELY NOT a character class in Diablo. Or in Neverwinter Nights. Or in Everquest. The word you FREAKS are looking for is ROGUE. Rogue rogue rogue rogue rogue.

Loose. Means 'not tight'. Rhymes with 'goose'. It does not mean LOSE. To make something lost, you have to LOSE it, not LOOSE it. You might think that lose rhymes with nose, but it DOESN'T. Lose rhymes with... um... snooze :)

Tatooine. Planet from those Star Wars movies. This one is slightly less universal, but I play Star Wars Galaxies A LOT and am.... flipping... tired of seeing 'Tatoonie'. I mean, come ON!!! It sounds like the opening part of the Tiny Toons theme....
"Tat-tiny, Tatoonie, we're all the little loonies!".... anyways, for a big bunch of Star Wars freaks, you'd think they'd be able to spell Tatooine correctly. But they can't, so they suck.

A LOT is TWO WORDS!!! (Just a reminder. I see 'alot' daily, even when I keep my eyes taped shut and don't get out of bed).

Misc: One 'f' in Professional; DeFINITEly; SepArate. Patients visit hospitals, patience is a virtue.

I'd love to blame Americans for all of these heinous crimes against language, because they did replace a whole bunch of our 's's with 'z's (or to put it another way, replaced our esses with zeez), but English people make these mistakes too, so I'm blaming the dumb law that stops me from shooting stupid people. You know who you are.

Phew! What a fun rant :). I am sure that I will be adding more common mistakes to this little guide to not looking like an illiterate very soon. If you've made any of the above mistakes, you're bad and I hate you.

You seriously need to chill out, you seem to be taking it a little bit too seriously.

Maybe some people can't spell... or something like that :D

So kick back, relax and drink lots of beer (Stella in particular)

Works for me... :beer2:

"There", "their", and "they're" are my pet peeves with posters; along with bad uses of punctuation and apostrophes. ;)

OK, that DID used to confuse me, how the possessive used no apostrophe. For example, the LAMP'S (possessive) bulb is ITS bulb (still possessive, but no apostrophe). Apostrophe for the name of the object, but not for its pronoun. I was totally getting that wrong up until around the age of 11. The only time there's an apostrophe with 'its' is when it's an abbreviation of 'it is'.

I think :)

You bring up a good point PenguinJim. If you play an mmorpg you will know ( hell , if you are on the Internet at all ) that people butcher grammar and spelling. It pisses me off too.

Side note : I'm horrible at spelling and grammar, please... don't kill me

Since I know i am horrible, I have a nifty little link (http://www.spellcheck.net/) to a spell checker that helps me out. I wish there was a spell checker available in mmorpgs, because people down right slaughter the language ( and it doesn't matter what language it is ).

I'm drunk .. so I'll stop here.. not really drunk.. but hell.. I wish I could be , but I have to keep customers from killing the store.

The funny thing is that the people who learned the language as a second language seem to have better grammar than some Americans . This is something I see all around me. ;)
And spelling mistakes.... well... this is something that you just can't get away from. Face it, not all of us are English professors or spelling bee champs. :p I make my share of mistakes and I'm sure I make some grammar mistakes some places too. But when I write online I am not too concerned about it since it's not an English paper that I'm writing and as long as my point comes across... I'm happy :D
What does frustrate me is when I read a post or comment and I have no clue of what the guy is trying to say. You read it again and you have no clue. There's some nouns, verbs and pronouns in there but the order is all messed up and some extra word added in just to confuse the hell out of you. I've seen a couple of those and I just end up leaving it alone. ;)

the word it's is a contraction. The word it's is possive. ;) :p It depends on the context.:D It's confusing to me but then again I can't spell.:o

NO NO NO NO NO!!! Its without the apostraphe is possessive.

Seriously, though, I've been waiting for someone to finally go nuts on the piss poor spelling and grammar skills of Internet communication. I'm just glad it wasn't me. :D

I actually was being funny. I frankly don't know. I do use its for possesive. I was never sure if it was right though.

Did you know that received is the most misspelled word in the english language?

I believe it. Also you have no idea how often people misspell prairie. I used to live on a Prairie Avenue and whenver I would order stuff or ask for something to be sent to me, 99 times out of 100 they would ask, "Prairie, how do you spell that?"

Wheeeee...
this guy's got it.

I gave a similar rant about "then" and "than" along with a few other words that piss me off pretty hard.

I feel ya on the whole incorrect grammar, incorrect spelling, and misuse of similar words...
BAH!

what really pisses me off is when people dont use proper capitalization or punctuation and then they start talking in runon sentences

and i really, really hate it when people dont capitalize I

Edit: God that was painful to write the way I did above. I've never been able to bring myself to type that way.

Sat, I can do it occasionally. But generally when doing one-line responses because I am a lazy bastard.

If it's one line to begin with, the rules associated with paragraph structure (capitalization and punctuation) go BAIBAI!

hehe....

more i surf internet and use chat/irc, more i am getting confused with some english words. my grammar was much better before i started using internet. why?
because when I was learning english, I had to do everything grammatically correct, but when you use internet all day and you see so many mistakes, you start using wrong words.

like "that" and "thet"...i know there is some sort of difference, but I have no clue what it is anymore.

and there are other examples for that(thet?)......

PenguinJim
07-21-03, 02:40 AM
Ooooh! Ooooh! I know the answer to this one!!!

The difference between 'that' and 'thet' is.... 'that' is a word, while 'thet' isn't :)

ROFL.....

see....I probablly knew this some time ago, but now I have to ask because I have no clue what is correct and what isn't.

I better stop posting today, not my day at all.

to be honest i sorta practice my english in online conversations, its pretty much the only way i can use the language continuously. sure the grammar is butchered sometimes ("ME NEED ROMZ FOR THE ENUMERATOR!!!11" :o), depends on the kinda people you talk to yet it just keeps you going. have been around on irc and message boards around 2 years now and i at least learned some interesting words that way
