View Full Version : How Far Would You Go?

After reading this (http://www.cnn.com/2003/HEALTH/07/19/aging/index.html)

I found myself wondering, how long would I like to live if the choice was up to me?

Given that it wouldn't be the curse of immortality with all the rages of ages still taking their toll.

With stem cells, knowing how telomeres affect cellular aging and a few other things coming down the pipe, they're forcasting a 500 year life expectancy...

hmm, I wonder about overpopulation :)

When I reach the age where I miss the toilet I kill myself there and then:eek:

...as I'm able to live and still take care of meself without being a big burden on others. :)

I'm guessing late 70's, early 80's...but who knows.

When it happens it'll be ok, I had a really cool life.

I'll go when the man up above tells me my time's up... hopefully not for a while yet, as I've much to achieve in my life yet.

Still... I suppose some might like the idea of finding out what happens in the distant future... so each to their own :)

While it would be interesting to see the possibilities of living well beyond 100 years, I have to wonder just how good life would be at that age. If I'm just going to be sitting in a wheelchair in some old folks' home would it really be worth it?

Then there's the whole overpopulation thing. That's a huge can of worms right there.

Overpopulation is already a big problem. This would ofcourse make it much worse. I just don't understand (at the risk of offending some here) why people feel the need or the entitlement to reproduce 3,4,5, even six times. They don't seem to care much about overpopulation.

If I have kids, 2 is my limit. Preferably 2 boys. ;)
Girls are to much trouble.

I, myself, wouldn't want to live past 200 years. I think the lifespan that people have in the Dune trilogy is about right. The key ofcourse is quality of life. If I could live to be 150 and still walk unaided and be in minimal pain, that would obviously be better than the alternative.

I hate to break it to you Rip but over population in the US is a myth. We are below the replacement level right now. This is not to say that there arn't too many people but the growth has stopped.

So we are at negative growth or stable growth here right now? When I was younger the population was well under 255 million. Now I understand it is up to what, 300 mill?

Overpopulation is known to be a much worse problem in the 3rd world countries ofcourse, but sooner or later it'll make everyone feel the pinch if we (as in humans) don't start using birth control or abstaining for crying out loud.

Once the baby boomers start dying out, which should be in the next 20-30 years, then the growth rate should fall to the negative side.

It's funny this topic should come up because I was reading about China and their population woes. The government's one-child only policy apparently has saved over 200 million births since it was implemented in the 1980's. The problem is infanticide of female babies, since a male child is always preferred in that country. The rate of male to female births is something like 135 to 100 right now, which is alarmingly high when you consider that in the USA it's just about at 100 to 100.

Well, Methuselah lived 900+ years of age, but since there is no cover from the sun anymore, that pretty much accelerated our aging.

Plus I don't want to live long enough where someone needs to change my diaper anyway...

Right now my grandfather is slowly dying in a extended care facility. I visit him once or twice a week. He smoked most his life has one lung left and the other is in terrible shape. Grandpa's heart is none the better either. I has been defibulation for a while now. The nurses say he will slowly suffocate to death. He if febal to an extreme. The lack of oxygen make it hare for him to think clearly so he drifts in and out of conversations. He is only 78 years old. The doctors say it could be any day now. So every time I see him it just might be the last.

This is a terrible way to die.
