Previous thread (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13968) about this matter.

WASHINGTON - The music industry has issued at least 871 federal subpoenas against computer users this month suspected of illegally sharing music files on the Internet, with roughly 75 new subpoenas being approved each day, U.S. court officials said Friday.

The Recording Industry Association of America has said it expects to file at least several hundred lawsuits seeking financial damages within the next eight weeks. U.S. copyright laws allow for damages of $750 to $150,000 for each song offered illegally on a person's computer, but the RIAA has said it would be open to settlement proposals from defendants.

In some cases, subpoenas cite as few as five songs as "representative recordings" of music files available for downloading from these users. The trade group for the largest music labels, the Washington-based RIAA, previously indicated its lawyers would target Internet users who offer substantial collections of MP3 song files but declined to say how many songs might qualify for a lawsuit.

The RIAA's subpoenas are so prolific that the U.S. District Court in Washington, already suffering staff shortages, has been forced to reassign employees from elsewhere in the clerk's office to help process paperwork, said Angela Caesar-Mobley, the clerk's operations manager.

Let's leave the rapists, child mollesters and murderers out on the street so we can instead convict filesharers.

That's good old corporate America for you ;) Forget the murderers and child rapists damnit we have a file sharer to catch!! Ah well I'm over here safely away from the RIAA, bring it boys:p :D

Edit: Bah! I can't believe people are stopping using file sharing programs, there is no way in hell the RIAA can take on every single user there is.

I don't think there is any jail time involved here. Correct me if I'm wrong, but these lawsuits seek monetary compensation. So, they're out to ruin you financially and not necessarily lock you up. The child molesters, etc. shouldn't end up leaving jail to make room for the p2p sharers. :)

That said, the RIAA sucks. They went through tantrums like this when people got tape cassettes back in the eighties and started making their own mixes from the radio, etc.. They would've pulled the same crap then if there had been a way to track it. Now it would appear they've got you...

Of course once you see what their monetary requirements are, you may have wished you'd gone to jail. I recall they've sucked one kids life savings, and fined another to $500/mo payments for the rest of his natural life....

Somehow I think that these are "cruel and unusal punishment[s]" .

And for all that, not a dime will get to artists.

No, federal prison and becoming bunkmates with some guy named bubba are far and away much worse than any monetary compenstation they might try and get. Clearly.

Regarding the last statement, I would agree that they are getting a bit carried away with this. I mean, isn't it something like 2,000 dollars a song that they think they should be get? Ridiculous.

And personally, I think I'd rather do 5 years in jail then owe some suits in Hollywood 500 dollars a month until I die.
