When I plug my headphones into the center channel, my speakers mute as they're supposed to. However, I can't use the volume control to change the headphones volume. This is a problem because when people go to sleep in the house, I have to use them to game. Is there anything I can do about this? I don't want to have to quit the game and manually adjust the damned volume controls from Windows.

i have those very speakers. it's normal. it's annoying. the best idea i've come up with to deal with it is to:
1) quit/minimize the game and adjust windows volume.
2) adjust in-game volume. some games let you adjust a seperate volume for them
3) keep the speaker volume low and keep playing.
btw....i use the third option.

I suppose that I should keep window's volume lower and just turn up the spearkers, because what I have it at now is just entirely too freakin' loud for headphones. Thanks for the advice.

no problem...actually, it's kinda nice as my emachines keyboard has volume and play/stop/track controls for windows media and windows volume right on the keyboard. woohoo for me....at least there's something good about my emachine.
there is a little device... sold with microsoft's sidewinder headset and others... that basically allows you to switch between speaker/headset (its what I use) and it has a little volume control thinger on it as well...
I also have a volume control function on my keyboard and on my headphones cable so I have enough options myself... but I am sure the little device that allows you to switch instead of plugging in and out could be quite useful...
