Currently, my only computer is the laptop mentioned in my sig. Obviously, it just isn't cutting it for most new games. I have thought about building the following desktop:
Processor: Intel Core i7-920 ($279.99)
HSF: ?
Motherboard: EVGA X58 SLI ($269.99)
RAM: 3x 2GB Corsair Dominator TR3X6G1600C8D ($229.99)
Graphics card: EVGA GeForce GTX 480 SuperClocked ($529.99)
Sound card: Creative Sound Blaster PCI Express X-Fi Titanium ($99.99)
HDD/SSD: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB WD1001FALS ($94.99)
CD/DVD writer: Sony Optiarc AD-7241S ($24.99)
Power supply: Corsair HX850 ($169.99)
Case: SilverStone FT02B-W ($249.99)
Monitor: ?
Speakers: Logitech Z-5500 Digital 5.1 Speaker System ($319.99)
Keyboard: Razer Lycosa ($79.99)
Mouse: Razer DeathAdder ($59.99)
Total: $2,409.88
I got the prices from Newegg (but got the graphics card price from www.evga.com) just to get an idea even though I won't be able to order from there as I don't live in the US.
So, how does it look? How could I bring the price to about $2,000 without sacrificing too much performance? Will the GTX 480 fit in that mid-tower case?
For the monitor, is better to get a 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 for gaming? I, myself, prefer the look of the 16:10 monitors but don't know which is better for gaming.
By the way, the "standard" RAM speed for the i7-920 is 1066MHz and the actual speed of my RAM is 1600MHz. Why do they make RAM with speeds higher than what is supported by the processors? Is it for overclocking?
One last thing. Is there any refresh from Intel, ATI, or NVIDIA out any time soon? I mean I've survived this long on this laptop and I guess I can wait a little longer if there is some refresh due in a few months time.
