so after buying a gtx460, ive got an 8800 ultra kicking around. seeing as I don't really have a backup system and could do with replacing the p4 in the family room, I'm looking to rebuild my secondary system which was agp based. So I am looking for a cheap mobo and a good budget cpu, be it amd based or intel. I've got the case and psu for it. Any recommendations?

I actually have what you need... a new MSI 785GM-P45 AM3 motherboard (AM3 only, DDR3) for $55 shipped... Get an x3 chip for it for $70 (that may unlock with the right mobo like the one I'm selling) and 2x1gb DDR3 and you'd be all set.... or of course you could go 4gb for a bit more. If you only want DDR2 I do have some (G.Skill DDR2-800, the 3x customer award winning stuff from newegg) that I'm selling as well, G.Skill for $78 shipped.

Either way you can put something together for cheaper than the above post that performs basically as good... Bang for the buck FTW.

it is most likely going on a credit card and I'd rather buy new anyways. ;)

mullet, good stuff, I was hoping to go a little cheaper and nixed the ram to 2gb, but ive saved it to a wish list to come back to later. That asus mobo shouldn't have any conflicting video issues with my 8800 ultra should it?

ASRock N68-S UCC AM3/AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 7025 / nForce 630a Micro ATX AMD Motherboard $45 ,4GB OCZ Reaper HPC 2x2GB DDR2 1066 with a Free 4GB USB flash drive w/ purchase, ends 8/31 $91 with a $20 rebate and a AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition Callisto 3.2GHz $93 =Total $229.It really depends on how much you want to spend .Plus the Phenom II x2 555 Black edition has a good chance of unlocking a extra core or two for free performance,I build this system for my sister and was able to unlock all 4 cores ,but even if it just unlocks three it is a great chip plus it overclocks pretty good with two core I got 4.1g and with four I got 3.8g .I bought a cheap Heatsink fan cooler for $18 EVERCOOL HPFA-10025 100mm Ever Lubricate CPU Cooler and it drop my tempertures by over 22c on load over the stock heatsink.

Nahh you can always shut off the on board video in the bios but you could always sell the 8800GTX and use the 4200 onboard and watch movies.

hmm, If I was to spend about $100 bucks on CPU, I would preffer to buy the Athlon II X4 620-635 price range between $90-100 bucks.

the 635 is 2.9ghz and its quad core, in long run better investment.

I have an X2 550BE and I like it. I even managed to unlock all 4 cores on my Gigabyte GA-MA785G-UD3H. I picked those two up pretty recently (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=144681) for about $160 so I could turn my MSI P35 Platinum + Intel e8400 into a gaming machine. The 550 feels pretty equivalent to the e8400.

Any of the cheap Asus AM3 boards with ATI chipset. Might have useless Ethernet but that's probably not a big problem for most.

Any black edition AM3 CPU. For games I still recommend low core count and high clockspeed. The HSF in there is surprisingly usable.

Kingston value RAM or RAM bought off Ebay. You can get these AM3 boards with DDR2 memory slots, in case you snipe a cheap DDR2 set.

Yeah DDR2 ftw. I went 4GB because I assumed you were going win 7 64 bit.

Well saddly its pretty hard to make a dirt cheap system these days. Even sadder, all these $100 mobos are generally better then my aged 680i, so I'll prolly just hold out and then swap things around when I buy a new mobo and cpu for my main pc, something I am looking to do shortly down the road now that I've gotten a gtx 460.
