Hi, Greetings from Germany!!!!

Nice website and forum you've got!!

Just bought my new FX 5900 Ultra from Leadtek, 480 eur!!!(that's a lot of bucks!!!), I've tried some games and I have some questions:

I'm playing a lot of old games now that I can max out every single graphic option, but the strange thing is that while most of them perform incredibly fast(4x AA and 8xAF on)... some others not, I guess it's maybe they were not optimized for AA and AF? ( example: No one lives Forever: GOTY edition).

Related to new games....

I have just been able to try Unreal 2 (not patched), which AA and AF setttings are more suitable for this game? I've found that this game is a resource hog!! and at 1600x1200 with maxed options I have slowdowns in battles... isn't is odd for such a powerful graphic card?

Thx.
Adios!!!

No, in Unreal II in intence battles i get slowdowns at 1280x1024 with AA and AF settings maxed, the game slows down in intense fight sceens. But the game looks very good graphicly and is fine to play with lesser AA and AF settings.

I find it strange that both of you litri and GlowStick has experienced same problem with Unreal 2. I has the same Leadtek 5900 Ultra litri got, I ran Unreal 2 on my AthlonXP 1800+, 512Mb DDR266, SB Auidgy and used latest leaked Detonator 45.20 driver.

Unreal 2 games settings all maxed to the full and I tested it run at 1280x1024 85Hz and 1600x1200 85Hz both with 4xS FSAA & 8xAF. The game is running very smooth with intence battles, none of it were slowed down, the game is very fast and huge image quality improvement than on my previous Geforce 4 Ti 4600 that ran the game slow.

Litri, it looked like you has some problem with your PC, tell me your full spec.

I am not surprised when I looked at GlowStick PC spec and cant imagine what exactly gone wrong with more powerful P4 2.53Ghz, fast DDR333 memory and Radeon 9800 Pro than my less powerful PC with the most powerful graphic card Leadtek Geforce FX 5900 Ultra 256Mb. ;)

Maybe Pentium 4 does not run Unreal 2 as smooth as AthlonXP?

Hm, yes while you pay play Unreal II at 1280x1024 with 4xAA and 8xAF witch i tested and works 'decent' and just a bit shady on out door sceens.

But, as a ATi radeon user, when i say i played the game with settings maxed, i mean 6xAA 16xAF all game details on high shadows on best, witch has rediculiously good iq at the sacrafice of fps.

But as a gamer, i like to keep my fps around 100, espically for the sceen where you are in that tower snipeing, you need a lotta fps!

These are my specs:

AMD Athlon Xp 2400+
1gig RAM Infineon CL2.0 6-2-2-2
Leadtek Winfast N-force 2 Ultra 400 Deluxe Limited
Winfast A350 Ultra TDH Myvivo 256mb
Nforce drivers ver. 2.43
Geforce FX drivers ver. 44.67

I have heard that this Nforce dirvers are giving headaches to a lot of people, but I haven't experience such things, other than the computer believing that my storage and optical drives are SCSI. If ver 2.43 affects perfomance in games is something I'm not aware of.

I don't know what kind of difference in perfomance could give the drivers Athlon XP1800 is using for the graphic card, probably the have some improvements....

But, let me tell you, that every other game runs silky smoth with 4x AA and 8x AF, by the way.. I'm playing Unreal 2 without the latest patch which is said to improve perfomance in some areas, but believe me I cannot play the game smoothly at 1600x1200 85hz maxed out with 4x AA and 8x AF, even with Vsync off( makes the game smooth but only in small areas) and the same goes for 1280x1024....

maybe you should check this link and see the fps they get with vsync off on a P4 3.2.....

I downloaded FRAP 2.0.0 demo for temporary use until I get response how to display FPS with Unreal 2 command so here the result I got from FRAP 2.0.0:

74fps on 1280x1024 85Hz 0x FSAA 0xAF Quality
70fps on 1280x1024 85Hz 4x FSAA 8xAF Quality

74fps on 1600x1200 85Hz 0x FSAA 0xAF Quality
63fps on 1600x1200 85Hz 4x FSAA 8xAF Quality

70fps on 1920x1440 85Hz 0x FSAA 0xAF Quality
48fps on 1920x1440 85Hz 4x FSAA 8xAF Quality

I am surprised my AthlonXP1800+ got the same performance as Pentium 4 3.2Ghz at 74fps on 1280x1024 and got almost no performance hit with 4xFSAA & 8xAF at 70fps, Pentium 4 3.2Ghz took huge performance hit at 34fps.

I am also surprised 1600x1200 has same fps as 1280x1024 without FSAA & AF, it scored 63fps with 4xFSAA & 8xAF, it much faster than on poor Pentium 4 3.2Ghz scored 26fps.

I dont know why the review never done 1920x1440, I am surprised it run very well at the highest resolution, it scored 70fps without FSAA & AF, it 4fps less than it did in both 1280x1024 and 1600x1200, it not much different. With 4xFSAA & 8xAF it dropped below 60fps barrier to 48fps, it quite good to play 4xFSAA & 8xAF at 1920x1440.

I think Detonator 45.20 is the best driver to play with FSAA and AF, I am really surprised my PC can eat Pentium 4 3.2Ghz for lunch. I cant believed that Pentium 4 3.2Ghz got 512k L2 Cache and the review got 1Gb DDR SDRAM, huh it should scored Unreal 2 much higher than mine with 512Mb DDR SDRAM. :D

Also I noticed that in the review at 1600x1200 that Radeon 9800 Pro 256Mb is completed destroyed by my card at 74fps without FSAA & AF, Radeon scored 70fps and with 4xFSAA & 8AF mine got 63fps, Radeon scored 44fps with 4xFSAA & 16xAF.

Nvidia released new Nforce driver 2.45, it may will help boost performance on Unreal 2. :)

It's also worth remembering it's not always just to do with the hardware. NOLF used the Lithtech engine and although it looked / looks nice it places, it ran like a one legged donkey with serious foot rot. Several patches later along with numerous faster graphics cards and it still runs sub par with no AA/AF. This contrasts with Nolf 2 (with new lithtech engine), that looked, (and still looks), superb in places and runs so so much better.

We've now got TR AOD which looks nice in places, but is stretching the one legged donkey thing a stage further it runs so poorly even on top end hardware with modest res. No matter how good the hardware it can't make up for clumsy coded games, or poor game engines. Any one remember Omikron? well that game came out around Voodoo 3, (just before GF1) time if I remember correctly. It was is a good game, but only now does it run acceptably, (to me at least), on the latest hardware without AA /AF at a decent res (1280/1024), to do the game real justice.
