View Full Version : At 33 can I still play Division III College Football?
I'm thinking of enrolling at a local college next year, specifically Hobart William Smith, a Division III school (although in lacrosse they're Division I) ... If I was accepted, would I at all be able to try out for the football team? I never really thought about it before, but just the thought of putting on the pads again gets me all happy in my pants.
I'd be in really good shape(especially for age 33), and would probably be at 5'9", 155-160 lb. Kick/punt returner, slot receiver, cornerback... that'd be my thing. I can guarantee that I have great field vision, and I've always found it easy to embarrass opponents with a move so subtle it's hard to even see until you've already missed. Eric Metcalf? Wes Welker? That's me... the former more than the latter.
Hey, if it's an impossibility, then I don't really care. But time's going by fast, and soon my body won't be able to do the things I could when I was younger. That and parts of me want to try to be a little more adventurous after all the cancer bull-crap over the last few years. So if I can, I will. If I can't, then I'll either find something else to do or I'll mope around like Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite.
:p
Call and ask. Couldn't hurt.
Ok, I went to the website and tried to find a number for a "front desk" person to call. All I found were numbers for coaches and didn't want to call them.
Instead I did a web search. You're eligible if you haven't played 5 years elsewhere.

Anyone can try out. Obviously few make the team.
Idk, if I did it right, it can haz teh makins of a feel-good movie. :D It sure as heck would make a nice newspaper story.
If I tried out, there'd be no way I wouldn't make the team. If there's a reasonable chance of it being a possibility, for some odd reason this might be what actually breaks me out of the sometimes light/sometimes heavy depression I've been suffering from since I was diagnosed in '07. Not that I'd depend on it for that, but I'm a person fueled by catalysts... sometimes I have trouble starting my fire, but if I'm around just a little spark I can burn pretty bright at just about anything.
I'm going to call the coach, and I'll get ahold of the school about the classes etc., as I'm in quite a bit of debt but I think I could still find a way to enroll and be accepted there.
I just want to play a season, and two if I'm around for a second one.
I have a decent resume, but it's lacking in college experience and it's preventing me from attaining my career goals, and that in itself has helped be to become stagnant as far as career is concerned, and in debt to boot.
It's close enough of a college so that a commute would be easy (25 minutes), and I have to admit that my parents might (even at my age) help me pay for it, as they know how much better-off I would be with a degree and some direction. My kids would be proud of me, and I'd be proud of myself as well.
I dunno, could just be a pipe dream... but I'll look into all of this and see what my options are. I'm ready to be done with recovering from cancer , and kinda need to get back to the business of "building" my life instead of just "managing" it.

Not at my school. There were no cuts, you just didn't get to travel if you weren't one of the top players. Everybody suited up for home games though. One of the benefits of D!!!. :)
The other issue you might run into is if you were in school previously. I can't remember whether it was a school or NCAA rule, but I recall something about losing your eligibility to play five years after you started school. My school had more strict rules than the NCAA though so it's possible that won't apply in this case.
Finally, assuming there are no eligibility issues, I'm pretty sure you can do this. I know there was a feature on ESPN a while back about a guy who I think was in his forties and was playing football in college. EDIT: I see you already found that. If you can still play and are eligible they should let you.
Eligible? I don't know if I would be. I never played college sports.

Have you ever played tackle football before rage? It's a lot different than two hand touch. It's very demanding on your body. Especially for a 33 year old.

I played 2 yrs of high school football, and we were a big and extremely physical team that almost won state.
I'm very familiar with the pain involved. :D ... and if it's a possibility I'd train like a madman (while taking into account that 'll need to ease back into high impact exercise over the course of a few months).
And I suck at b-ball. I always go right. Always.

No offense- but I never did understand a woman's desire to be a cheerleader. I mean, really- all they are there for is eyecandy. Seems kinda' degrading to me.

Actually, I was totally kidding...but I am sure that for the right person it would be a blast.
As for me, I don't think seeing me as a cheerleader would do much to boost anyone's morale, LOL... :)

Oooh- that's kinda' harsh, ma'am. :o
Had a hunch you were kidding- but my question wasn't directly targeted at you.
I mean, do some women really enjoy showing themselves off? Just seems... degrading... to me.
Then again, I'm rather old-fashioned so maybe I'm just missing something.
Idk why my pretty lady decided to self-depracate. :( She's the most beautiful woman in the world to me, and I'd sure as hell enjoy seeing her bouncing around fieldside if I were playing...:cool2::naughty:
... or the slightly more realistic "sitting on the bench", lol...

I was partially joking, partially being realistic. This whole thing is a hell of a longshot, I know that. If I'm told that in fact I can try out, however (I'm talking to the school's compliance coordinator tomorrow), I'll have a whole 10 months to get ready, and though time will fly by faster than I want it to, I for some reason actually think I can believe in myself enough to commit to an aggressive training program.

I just spoke with the eligibility coordinator, and I AM eligible to play!
Barring a return of cancer, I will at that point also be medically cleared to play.
Tryouts/camp is mid-August.
I'm going to investigate all of the degree programs, arrange my existing transcripts, and start the application process PRONTO.
My parents will help me finance this, and I'm willing to bet that my dad will also help me train, which I would start doing as soon as I was accepted.
I'm going to give this a shot! :)
