One of my buddies PSU died and it took the mobo out as well, my question is, Do you think the ram,Hard drive and CD/dvd rom drives are still good? Or would they be damaged as well with the motherboard...
He mainly wants me to remove the hard drive and install it in his new pc,I would hate to drive 40 miles to his home to install a dead hard drive.
They're probably ok, but there's only one way to be sure. ;)

i have a recordable tv box with usb output which is connected to my PC, once i put a fan in the TV box during summer but the screws were longer than i thought and when i turned on the power in shorted the tv box, blew the PSU and mobo on the tv box itself and sent a charge down the usb cable taking out the PC's motherboard (it blew a hole in the usb controller of the pc mobo). but all the other components in my PC were fine
Edit this was a while ago now, all things are pretty much changed now

PSU sending spikes and frying components are nothing new (awfully).
No way to know what got fried until you test them, as it depends on which voltage rail took the spike (3.3V, 5V, 12V), how big of a spike and how the other components are protected.
Hope he did not lose too much.
