I wanted to start a thread to get people's recommends on older PC games that are still worthy to play.

I've decided to take a break from my PS3/Wii/new PC games for a while and recently began playing Wizard's Crown (an RPG from SSI I played back in 1986). The graphics are of course not the best (good for 1986), but man has it been uber-fun building up my characters, the battles are fun and the AI is pretty good. Amazing that I am having as much fun as I did over 2 decades ago (when I have those 'Oh yeah, I remember that' moments).

So anyhow...Wizard's Crown is my recommendation.

Here is a link to the free download and manual (there are 3 links for the game and one for the manual): http://www.hotud.org/component/content/article/39-rpg/39/20964

And maps/guides can be found here (for Apple II but the game is exactly the same on the PC): http://www.gamefaqs.com/appleii/575830-wizards-crown/faqs

Being a DOS based game, you may want to use the latest version of DOSBox for this and other similar games found here (the 1st link for Win32 installer): http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1

I plan to re-play the original Pool of Radiance next (and the rest of the series as time permits).

So, feed the kitteh...what is your recommendation? (please provide links if possible)

Cheers and thanks!

Conqueror AD 1086 was such an awesome game from 1995. It mixed fps castle raiding with army building and castle construction. You could either raise an army big enough to defeat all of England by raiding castles fps style or you could gain all the equipment necessary to slay the dragon by competing in tournaments and swaying the ladies. I wish there were a modern version available. Heres a trailer:

I've been playing the old perfect dark for n64 on live arcade. Really fun. I loved the old one and this one is in HD with updated graphics but everything else is unchanged.

I also played a rpg game, that involved you having to get crystals to free a princess who was stuck in stone...the name slips my mind...i really enjoyed that one too...anyone recall it? it was a side scroller/rpg style.

Ultima 8 - My first real RPG game.

 Cool recommendations, thanks gentlemen & keep them coming!

You guys ever visit the new Home of the Underdogs site? They have links to tons of abandonware/freeware. Here if you are interested: http://hotud.org/

I just read they have re-released Master of Magic.

Thus, my updated list of 'games I want to play when time (or the wife) permits' follows:

1. Wizard’s Crown
2. Phantasie I, II and/or III
3. Magic Candle (1st one)?
4. Wasteland
5. Pool of Radiance series
6. Dark Heart of Uukrul
7. Four Crystals of Trazere (aka Empire orLegend)
8. Worlds of Legend
9. Albion
10. Darklands
11. Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall and Arena
12. Master of Magic

All look to be free downloads except #12.

Ah yes, Civ II...ever play 'Fantastic Worlds' for Civ II? That was a great ad on, I highly recommend. :)

How does MOO I compare to II meth? I only played MOO II but many many times, great game (ship design was mucho fun). In other words, is it worth my time to play I if I already played II tons?

thx!

Yes. But it must be the original one, the new one put out in 200? suxored after about 1-2 hours.

Oh meth, you gotta play it when you get some time amigo, I highly recommend. Kinda like Alpha Centauri but with better diplomacy and cool ship to ship turn based battles. Tons of techs to research too. I looked around but I can't find it for free tho.

In my search, I did run across Iron Seed, a precursor to MOO I - looks interesting: http://hotud.org/component/content/article/37-strategy/20244

Unreal2 ? I remember it was really bad game... but I never got too much into it.

Besides that: Since I got a Netbook recently, I will be replaying oldies (nostalgia time) too. First games that comes to my mind:
Duke3d
Blood
Shadow Warrior
Hexen
Mdk
Doom2
Outlaws
Unreal
Quake and Quake2
HalfLife
Jedi Knight Dark Forces (and so on to Jedi Academy)
Kotor
Icewind Dale2
Beyond good and Evil
Kabuto(only for jokes)
Sanitarium(I never got past 3rd level and never will... game is too heavy for me)
Syberia 1and2
Replay BrokenSword3 and finally play BS1&2
Neverwinter (I never actually played it longer than beginning.... Always said to myself that I will replay it later.... Still waiting)

there is sooo much more. Some I dont recall just now and some just too new to fit this topic..... Anyway...
