Hi guys, I'm looking for a new 1TB hdd from WD. There are currently two in the Caviar Black series that are arguably the best buy:

The older FALS with 32MB memory or the new FAEX with 64MB?

Thanks!

Probably the newer 64MB one but you might want to look into the FUXIT model if you can't find either.

Both are available (at a shop nearby) and within $10 one from another - the FALS veing the cheapest.

The newer model is better all around expect for acoustics. It's a loud drive, but it beats the pants off of pretty much any other mechanical drive but the raptor, and even then I think it's damn near.

Looks like it has the same acoustics as my WD 500 GB Caviar Blue AAKS, so noise shouldn't be a problem - can't hear the hdd over my 6 case fans, not to mention the GTX 480's fan...

FAEX, without any doubt, it has 32MB more cache than my previous Caviar Black unit, and it's faster (can't tell you how much faster but... it is). A bit more price? Yes, but being on a SATA-600 interface makes for the difference, and it's well worth (in my opinion, at least) :P

number of platters = the key

I've had a few in the shop... it's louder in practice trust me. VERY fast though.

Yep, 2 x 500 GB platters vs. three in the FALS version, afaik. I'll get the FAEX next week. Thanks for your help.
