The CIO (Chief Information Officer) of an IS department does not know how to shut down his Windows 98 PC without pressing the power button. He does not know that you are supposed to use the shut down function.

What would you make of this situation?

Whatever you do, do NOT let 'em even see you crack a grin when you're trying to train 'em on it!

I never minded helping the managers at US Steel, but I had the damndest time not laughing out loud at some of the things they said/did!

And every single one of 'em had all their username/passwords sticky taped to their monitors, every one.

I guess what I'm getting at here is that I don't think anyone who doesn't know how to properly shut down a workstation should *ever* be in a position of authority within an IS/IT support department. That person simply has, IMHO, no business being in that job.

I just was curious to see if I was the only one that felt this way...

It depends on the age of your manager. If he/she is 60 years old then they probably started off in IT programming IBM punch card machines. In which case their lack of PC skills doesn't make them dumb, just out of touch with modern technology. I've worked for people like that. My current boss is pretty cool and knows her way around NT and SQL server.

Sometimes managers are just that, managers. They don't have a clue about how to do the jobs of their staff, all they do is process paper work and talk business lingo in countless meetings.
