I was initially planning to upgrade my current rig to a Quad, but decided hell...why not just upgrade the entire system.

I've been a bit out of the loop with the CPU department/Mem, so i thought i'll pick some items and throw it out there and see if i am going in the right path or not...

Also are there any new cpu chips coming out? I saw a thread a week ago where a guy explained that there is a new cpu coming out but it is not as good as the i7, and the next i7 killer will be late 2011...

Anyway this is what i am going for (i am buying these from www.arc.com.au)

CPU -
i7 950 - $315AUD

Memory -
Corsair DOMINATOR-GT 6GB (8-9-8-24) @ 2000Mhz - $242AUD
Corsair TR3X6G1600C7 6GB (7-7-7-20) - $362AUD - These seem fairly new i can't even find it on the site...significant cost difference..i wonder if going the Dominator will be better (better heatsink on it too) and put the extra money towards a good motherboard/psu?.

Motherboard -
Asus Rampage III Formula MB - $370AUD
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 LGA1366 - $307AUD
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD9 Intel® X58 + ICH10R Chipset Socket 1366 USB3.0 & SATA3.0 - $565AUD (JESUS!)
ASUS Rampage III Extreme - $496AUD (Guessing not worth it..)

For the motherboard i am leaning towards an ASUS item...mainly because my previous ASUS motherboard has been rock solid and the quality is great, i also see the Rampage III popping up on a lot of the Guru3d reviews...so it must be good right? So many options here...and it all seems the same..in terms of spec...just a big difference in price...

Case -
CoolerMaster NV-942-KKN1 HAF-X nVidia Edition Windowed Side Panel - $264AUD (Looks pretty cool too)
Antec Twelve Hundred 1200 Tower Gaming Case - $214AUD ( I have a Antec 900, it's not bad, the 1200 has some improvements for slide out motherboard tray/wire management)

PSU -
1200W "Corsair" AX-1200 ATX Power Supply - $370AUD ( I really don't want to go cheap on this section)

GPU -
I've been with the Red team for the last 2 releases (4xxx/5xxx), and i think i might hang onto my 5xxx and switch over the GTX 580...i might actually just buy it right away not too sure on it yet..I think with the rest of the upgrades the 5870 might get a bit more life added to it..

I am hoping this upgrade will keep me for about a year+ maybe more, with just the gpu upgrade to extend the life time...

Should set me back about 1300AUD + GPU

What do you guys think?

950 good
go with the cheaper ram
go with the rampage 3 extreme
case, personal preference.
good psu choice
upgrading from a 5870 to 580 isnt much of an upgrade. If you want a gpu upgrade you will have to go crossfire or sli.

I am reading around about the Extreme vs Formula vs Gene, everyone seems to suggest that the Formula is a better choice considering they are identical aside from some minor changes that don't justify the huge cost margin for it. (http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1036329444)

Agree with you on the GTX580, i am actually going to see how well the 5870 will do with the cpu upgrade (Especially in BC2, about the only game i have issues with low framerate)

Thx for the tips Roadhog :)

For the motherboard, you might consider the Sabertooth:

http://www.asus.com.au/product.aspx?P_ID=AM2RChl84MZrKh6J&templete=2

I'm not sure what you give up with it compared to the more expensive models, but it looks like a deal.

On an Asus P6T Deluxe, I'm running two kits of:

http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_ddr3_pc3_12800_intel-i7_triple_channel

(Had to relax the timings a little to get 6 DIMMs running at DDR3 1600.)

The Corsair AX-1200 is certified by nVidia for use with THREE GTX480 or 580 cards, so I suppose that it'd be adequate for your purposes.

Ill have a look into that bobkn, thx :). It seems the ASUS motherboards onboard sound is very poor, so i might get a external sound card although i am a bit confused on which one to get...

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium PCIe - $116AUD
Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer - $119AUD
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium PCIe Fatal1ty Pro Series - $230AUD

From what i can tell...the only difference between them and the Fatal1ty series is the extra RAM..., but i have no idea what the difference is on the XtremeGamer/Titanium $116AUD...

Also looked up the RAM, i think i found a cheaper place with more options

6GB G.Skill DDR3-12800 RAM Kit, 3x 2GB, F3-12800CL6T-6GBP 6-8-6-20-2N - $258AUD
6GB Mushkin DDR3-1600 6GB Tri Channel [Ridgeback] RAM kit 3x 2048 sticks, 6-8-6-24 - $253AUD
CORSAIR TWIN3X 6GB 240-PIN DDR3 1600mhz 7-8-7-20 - $237AUD

I think the Dominator just has a good heatsink..

Corsair DOMINATOR-GT 6GB CMT6GX3M3A2000C8 (3x2GB PC16000) 8-9-8-24 240-Pin DDR3 2000MHz memory kit

About the new CPUs, they will be available in January but only replace the low and midrange segments.
At stock speed, the best of the new CPUs will be very close to the current fastest 1366 offerings. That's why Intel will release higher clocked Extreme Editions soon. They will beat the non Extreme Versions easily, especially when their new Turbo can kick in.

I'd say for a Quad Core system, wait for for those Sandy Bridge CPUs. The unlocked K-edition CPUs will be killer overclockers and are very cheap. You'll loose memory bandwidth though but you'll gain two native SATA 3 Ports for example. For more Cores, Sandy Bridge E is the way to go but those will be released in late next year.

About that Sabertooth board. If you're considering SLI/CF, don't buy that board. The PCI/PCIe layout is utter crap. Go with the Rampage 3 Extreme, one of the most balanced boards available.

I have no plans to go SLI or XFIRE.

About that Sabertooth board. If you're considering SLI/CF, don't buy that board. The PCI/PCIe layout is utter crap. Go with the Rampage 3 Extreme, one of the most balanced boards available.

The Sabertooth has a limited number of slots. Its single PCI slot is between the two PCI-E X16 slots, so it might not be useful if you want to use SLI or Crossfire X. I believe that the spacing between the two X16 slots is such to cause no problems with the hardware bridges for SLI or crossfire.

I suppose that might qualify as "utter crap", but as I have no PCI cards in my system, I'd cheerfully pay the $100 (US) less for the Sabertooth than the Rampage 3.

(Sarcasm mode ON.) If you want to raise the ante, why not push for a board with nVidia NF200 controllers that would support the X16 bandwidth on FOUR PCI-E slots? (P6T7 WS Supercomputer "Ultimate Gamer"). Who would buy a board that doen't support quad SLI? (Sarcasm mode OFF.)

(I'm not in the market: my P6T Deluxe is nearly two years old. I doubt that I'd care to upgrade, even if USB3 peripherals were plentiful, or 6Gb SATA drives offered real performance advantages.)

As regards the sound cards, I think that the X-Fi Extreme Gamer might be PCI. I recommend going with PCI-E (the Titanium) even if you don't get the Sabertooth.

However, the onboard sound might be good enough for your needs. Perhaps you should try it before investing.

Just found out about the new Antec gaming cases

Antec Dark Fleet DF-85
http://www.pureoverclock.com/images/review/cases/antec_df85/antec_df85_forums.jpg

I gotta say...over the Cooler Master, this looks really good. Comes with 7 Fans already, and the hot swap HDD looks so handy!.

The only negative thing has to be those annoying drive door thingies on the top for your DVD/Blu Ray

Hmm never mind, the HAF-X seems waay better compared to the Antec

you must one of the lucky ones, when I had one of those, it was crackle for almost every sound coming out of it. I would go with a vanilla xfi titanium pci-e. And I have the vanilla haf-x, it supports e-atx mb's, so your doing a little future proofing there if you go that way. And no, it's not ugly, Has huge fans on it including side. the 950 cpu is the sweet spot for i7's in terms of price and value. I would definitely buy the corsair ax 1200. it's a gold 80 plus certified power supply. I have the ud9 mb, got it for $525 cdn. regularly sells in NA for $700 cdn. as for graphics, the only upgrade option I can think for you is the 699x radeon or nvdiia's 595 when they come out. As for ram, stick with 6gb for tri channel whatever you do.

Btw is the 960 worth going for? I am actually gonna wait till around Jan 20-30~ before buying the stuff/building. The sandy would be out and the prices would go down a tad bit more...

To be honest, I don't think the performance difference between the 950 and 960 justifies the price difference.
