So, I have a confession. I bought Crysis at release, and I even bought Warhead at release, but my PC at the time (Q6600 + 8800GT + 4GB Ram + WinXP + 1280x1024 LCD) just wasn't enough to run it at its full glory. So I shelved the game after playing a few missions until I could experience it properly (i.e. maxed out at 1080p).
I am playing through Crysis now at 1080p, all settings very high, with 8x AA and 16x AF (forced through nv control panel), and I must say...HOLY CRAP. This game is absolutely incredible. The sheer vastness of the maps, amazing combat, great AI...wow!
Now I am seeing the Crysis 2 footage and trailers and am significantly underwhelmed...but that's okay, I still have the rest of Crysis and all of Warhead to complete! :)
But yeah...I've never seen visuals this good -- and I played Metro 2033 on VH!

Funny how now, even about 4 years later, it still holds the crown for best graphics. I think it's going to be a very long time before we see another game push the visual boundaries like Crysis did. :)

My experience with crysis is pretty much the total opposite of what you said.
I don't think it looks good at all, and I don't think it had good gameplay or AI. It really is a terrible game IMO. Only reason it was popular imo at the time is because it was said to be the best looking game then, and pushed hardware to the edge. But today it's just meh.

What games look better? I would really love to play them since my GTX 470s are dying of boredom here!
I have to wonder what are teh couple important new milestones in gaming graphics? Voxels? New shadowing/lighting methods? Raytracing? New and more powerful forms of HDR?
Expanding performance graphics to the mobile sector is cool.... the whole games on-demand thing is cool, and similar technological advancements are quite exciting... but what of just purely graphical advancements? Ones that when put into a game, a GTX 580 can just barely push 30 fps @ 1920x1080 with no AA or AF?

When it comes to immitating real-world visuals, no other game compares.
"Artistic" is an entirely different category and doesn't apply here. Unless you know of another game that better immitates real-world visuals?
Wait- MINECRAFT!!!!

I swear I think you can beat both Mr. Hunt and Comic Book Guy in a skepticism game. :p

There are plenty of games that destroy it visual wise. Crysis just doesn't look reaslistic imo. It has WAY too much contrast for one. Just tries too hard to look real imo.

I can see what you mean in regards to contrast... that's only one area though.
Show me a game that has characters that look as realistic as the character's in Crysis. The flesh alone is still something modern games struggle with. And in many areas the textures and detailed shaders can't be touched by modern games... I've yet to see anyother game render the inside of a ship as well as CryEngine 2. I have seen better looking rocks and trees, but a world with more lush vegetation doesn't exist. And in some places the ground texture is nearly photo-realistic.
But it does have it's flaws and the realism is easily destroyed when the horrid physics and other "anomolies" occur so often.

Destroy Crysis/Warhead for visuals? For serial? :bleh:
What games, I must play these.

Easy, Mass effect 2, Heavy Rain, HL2 CM10, Metro 2033. Thats all I can think of right now.

Textures is where I find crysis the most lacking. Most are low res when you get close, and can I say blurry mountains? My name is Crysis, I can render leaves REALLY well, enjoy the leaves, I mean game. kthx. <3

FSX, DCS: A10, actually a lot of games. Though if you like looking at tress all day, then crysis wins hands down.

Also, just to be clear, I'm not saying it doesn't look good for what it is, I'm saying that I don't think it looks as realistic as it was made out to be.

far cry 2 vanilla vs crysis vanilla = fc2 winner
me2 looks better than crysis as well (vanilla vs vanilla)
crysis was just a semi sandbox game with a nifty suit and nice sun shafts. Sure the engine is powerful, but I didn't see much in the game itself to see all the praise this game gets. the story was whack, so whack that I didn't even finish warhead. the a.i. was garbage, throw the koreans in the water and they do nothing but float.
i really can't think of one thing in crysis that made me go, holy crap this is awesome. the ai really ****ted that game. I played the game in hardcore and thought it was too easy (up until the ship/boss fight).
Hell I think CM10 is one of the best looking "games" out now albeit its a mod, most mods i've seen of crysis just jack up the hdr and mess with the dof, hardly realistic if you ask me. I play CM10 without bloom/hdr because its TOO EASY TO OVERUSE. The world of crysis would have been better if it was completely open world, and non-linear.
Crysis had a great engine, I wish I could see something done REALLY nice with it. But Crysis itself just fell short imo, nothing in the game makes me think of it being #1 in any category.
I will say; I do love the super suit, and I do love the ability to customize your weapons.
here's another thing that grinds my gears.
I could unload a clip into a korean from a 100+ yards away and he wouldn't die. ON HARDCORE AT THAT!

Hm, I am now getting to indoor areas...the game is far less impressive visually indoors than outdoors...

Yeah... IMO the 1st 20% or so of the game is awesome. Stunning landscapes, great water effects, etc...
99% of the rest of the game is just ****.
They really need to to hire some professionals to create a complete story line. They suck at it.

Yeah, FC2 does have things that make it just much better value really. Longer gameplay and many more things to do in FC2. Also, FC2 has a good balance of visuals and performance, were as Crysis goes all out to kill your hardware.

Oh I love the game. I'm just talking graphically. I really didn't like the level "Core" and I don't like this VTOL level called "Ascension", but overall I think the game itself is great!

Beat the game. The final mission is AWESOME! Stupid cliff-hanger ending though...argh. I hope Crysis 2 finishes this story at least.
Overall rating? 9.5/10, easily.
Final mission was boring. Just shooting aliens and one big alien ship at the end. All you do is hide in the crashed wreck and that alien ship with laser guns and a big massive cannon cannot touch you, much the same as a Hollywood film goes.

Dude, Just so you know, forcing AF through CP is useless with Veryhigh settings, this is due to the fact that Veryhigh settings utilizes Parallax Occlusion Mapping, or just POM, and POM doesn't allow Anisotropic Filtering ... So when POM is activated textures are gettin blurry at mid and long range distances. You can see the effect yourself by gettin ingame, looking down a road and brining down console and typing r_usepom 0 followed by retur to deactivate it. HOWEVER, there is a shader fix by a mod member at crymod.com that allows the use of POM along with foced AF. Here's a link bro: http://crymod.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=73616
Let me know if it works :)
There's several graphical improvement mods out there, including: Highres foliage, Highres Nanosuit and ofc Time of day based mods which totally changes the overall looking to the game to the much better... Throw me a PM if u are interested. Always come to me if theres anything you wonder about crysis, cuz am teh nr1 crysis fan/g33k on this forum.

I can max out 16xQ AA @ 2560x1440... you need another 6970.
