None of us have heard any further on the mysterious nv36 line, could Nvidia have determined it was too expensive to produce and not worth the gains over the fx5600u and instead, they are focusing their energy on the nv38/nv40?

I'd like to know the answer to that too  But probably no one knows what the answer is (Except maybe that Uttar guy or mufu person. Its quite interesting the names people pick for themselves on message boards) :)

It maybe true after reading this from Silicon Strategies.

NVIDIA Faced Production Problems?

NVIDIA would meet its sales forecast for the quarter, but the company lowered its gross-margin expectations for the period. The graphics chip maker blamed the issues on higher-than-expected product costs for its 0.13-micron foundry technology. Production and design problems have prompted one investment banking firm to lower its forecast at NVIDIA for the remainder of the year.

Michael McConnell, an analyst with Pacific Crest Securities Inc. of Portland, Ore., lowered his estimates for Nvidia, due to lackluster sales with its nForce 2 chip-set line and manufacturing problems with its GeForce FX 5600 line of graphics devices. Analysts believe that there are production problems with Nvidia's GeForce FX 5600, a high-end graphics chip for 3-D applications in computers. The FX 5600 is code-named the NV31. "We believe that TSMC has had difficulty manufacturing the NV31 at competitive 0.13-micron yields because it utilizes a 4x1 architecture at a clock speed of 350MHz," McConnell said in the report. On the other hand, the problem may be a design issue at NVIDIA.

Meh.

Lackluster sales of nF2? Huh? It's used in plenty of consumer boxes--not as many OEM boxes as they'd like, I'm sure, but then again, how many OEMs do you know of that ship with Athlons?

And as we've seen from NV30 and the IBM deal--TSMC IS THE PROBLEM.

Nah, the NV36 isn't cancelled. But I got no idea why some people thought it'll be released so early.
It's to be launched on the 15th of October normally. Note the term launched, not available.

I'm curious about the RV360 too, might be better than we think.

re the rv360-

Dig dropped a clue a couple of days ago. Said something about a new card having almost 9700pro speeds but costing 200usd.

I don't know how big a deal this really is- if true. When the r360 comes out, the prices on the 9800pro and non pro will have to come down. The 9800 non pro is already at 250 usd and it gets (or can over-clock to) 9700pro speeds. So maybe the rv360 will sell for less on the street- 175 usd, but performance wise, how would ati market the 9800np, which I assume would cost more?

Questions, questions.....

(note to self: build time machine)

Oh well, its going to be a very interesting couple of months ahead of us.

If i recall the Radeon 9800NP is clocked at the same speeds as a Radeon 9700Pro.

nvidia fixes .13 micron problems... (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/3/32191.html)

But it's figured the technology out at last, says McConnell: "Nvidia has informed its add-in board partners that yield problems on the NV35 and NV31 will be remedied by the end of August," he writes in his report. ®

The above register article seems to make me believe that rather than fixing the yield problems, nvidia just redesigned the nv35 and nv31 aka nv38 and 36 repsectively. Nothing like a respin to fix year old problems :/

Yeah i saw that at xbitlabs.com seems the problems are down to how nVIDIA designed their chips :o

Ok, so there you have it. Not cancelled. Time to close this thread before people get the wrong idea.
