You need a mod chip. Sorry.

Not true.

There are 3 DVD drives that have been used in the XBOX. Thomson, Phillips, and Samsung. The early production units (like mine) have Samsung drives. My XBOX will read all CD-RW'S and some light dye'd CD-R's. It just depends on the media used.

Even the Thomson and Philips drives will read most CD-RW's.

Like I said, it just depends on the media. There used to be a list out on the web of media that worked. Go google'ing and you should find it.

Whew! I havent played my X-box since last year. Any of you guys buy the remote to enable the DVD option.......if so is it worth the money and also does it have better DVD playback over the PS2?

Sorry for infringing on your post benz0209 but might as well ask. :)

They are about equal if you have the updated DVD playback software for the PS2.

I have the DVD Playback kit for the XBOX, and I love it. I don't use it as my primary DVD machine, but I do take it and my XBOX with me on trips, and it's nice to be able to have add gaming and movie upgrades to my hotel room for free :D

Yeah, but that only comes with new PS2s (is there a disc or something to upgrade the old PS2s?). Oh, and does that support zoom and faster FF/RWD controls? Those were the main things that kinda sucked about the PS2. Otherwise I think the Xbox DVD kit is much better then the PS2's (old ones anyway). A lot more features and faster. It easilly matches up to any mid-range DVD player. You get what you pay for I guess.

And yeah, the different drives each read different media. My Thomson drive didn't read any of my CD-R discs, but it reads my 3 year old CD-RW disc fine. From my experience CD-RW discs have better compatablity with most Xbox drives (the Philips drive is unfortunatly kinda rare). But I guess when they made the Xbox they focused on ripping origional audio CDs and not CD-Rs or RWs. Oh, and can the Xbox rip those stupid "copy protected" CDs? I'd imagine not but I figured I'd ask.

Not that I'm aware of. When the sound track to The Fast and the Furious came out, the first clever idea we had to try and get past the copy protection was to put it in the XBOX and rip it. Didn't work.

Have you tried using Feurio to rip copy protected CDs? I have a couple protected discs that have ripped flawlessly.

Na, never really cared about it. The only reason we tried was because we couldn't play the disk in a computer. That sort of pissed us off, so we tried to get clever with it. It was smarter then us, so we went back to our beers and Co-Op Halo.

Concerning DVD playback, does MS update their drivers? There is this incompatibility list for PS2 and Xbox on a number of DVDs.

Hmm...good question.

I have The Thin Red Line, Cast Away, Bad Boys and Planet of the Apes, and I've never had a problem with them on my XBOX.
