ASUS, ASRock and Gigabyte announced that some of new revised AM3 motherboards with current chipsets will support AM3+ Bulldozer CPUs through future BIOS updates. Unfortunately with current chipsets mean that some features like Bulldozer power management and VCore will be disabled, you will need to wait for new AMD 900 series chipset to unlock all features.

If the motherboard you bought recently come with a black socket AM3b with 1 extra pin then you will know this mean AM3+.

That's pretty nice for recent AM3 purchases. I guess it's no big deal if the power management features aren't supported, as long as it runs the chips.

So I guess the sources were right that AM3 wouldn't support AM3+, but apparently new boards shipped with the AM3+ socket and will provide support (albeit not complete support) via a BIOS update later. The pin layout differs on AM3+/AM3 by one pin though, so it should be apparent to some users when the chip doesn't fit. Otherwise, this could get really confusing for first time system builders lol.

(AM3+ left, AM3 right)

Notice the upper right block has 2 pins blocked on AM3 and 1 pin blocked on AM3+

Seems that the sockets are going to be black to. It's not hard for the manfactures to leave an extra socket pin. Might be why all the high end boards will support am3+. Amd covers it back by saying it's not going to work. This will be due limited amount of boards that can support it and people don't rush out and get any am3 board.

So wait, is this only new revisions of those boards? I have the first revision of the 890 pro/usb3

Yes it seems to be only the newest revisions. Check your socket in your manual. If it says AM3 then it probably won't support them. If it says AM3b, then it probably will (see my post above).

I doubt your first revision board will support the chips.

You might be lucky only way to find out is to inspect the socket and see the pin layout.

I don't know how it is in the UK, but here in the States there are a few AM3+ boards available.

Better off waiting for the 9xx series boards at this point, reviews are out for the 990FX. I love the ASUS sabretooth myself.

I was going to get the ASROCK 890GM PRO3 but decided to stick with the GA880G board which was half the price and with the 990FX boards on preorder now. Wanted a micro ATX mother board for a media centre PC. I am going to give it a moth then get a 990FX, got my eyes set on either the GA990FF UD5 or 7 or the ASUS ROG 990FX and Sabretooth.

I like the look of the Gigabyte boards but the ASUS boards has more PWM fan headers.
