GeForce.com has done a pretty nice interview with Battlefield 3 Executive Producer Patrick Bach on the development of Battlefield 3 (http://www.geforce.com/#/News/articles/battlefield3-interview) and why they are focusing on the PC and not the console. In the interview they talk about why they are developing Battlefield 3 on the PC first and then scaling it back to work on the consoles. Patrick explains that the game they want to make with things like physics and destruction and better graphics are not possible on the consoles that are 5 years old now. This is also why PhysX and other physics features in games are still nothing more than eye candy. It is good to see at least one developer moving beyond the constraints of the consoles and being to push PC hardware once again. With the recent news that Microsoft is rumored to be looking at a 2015 release for the next generation Xbox (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/exclusive-microsoft-looking-to-2015-for-next-gen-xbox-release/46247) and Sony not expected the PS4 anytime soon (http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/85461/sony-not-expecting-ps4-anytime-soon/), seeing physics and destruction implemented more into games looks like it might take awhile before it is more than just eye candy.

GeForce.com: Are there going to be any new destructible enhancements to Battlefield 3? Bad Company did a really good job with that.

Patrick Bach: Battlefield 2 didn‚??t have any destruction so Battlefield 3 will be the first core title with destruction and of course we‚??re doing some bold moves by not only being in the more urban environments, where we‚??ve been before, but we‚??re going into cities now, so you need to have even more destruction where you can actually affect objects ‚?? the buildings around you, to make it feel like a physical world.

GeForce.com: Regarding why destructibility hasn‚??t been fully embraced in games, it probably has to do with the fact that, unlike Frostbite, most engines are not capable of it and for developers, it‚??s just cheaper to use a prebuilt engine.

Patrick Bach: Absolutely.
