View Full Version : Think i can get away with a 600w PSU?

After i discovered that my last cheap PSU which was rated as 1100w which was used for 2 years killed my CPU, motherboard, and maybe my video card as it's untested you think i can get away with a cheap PSU 600w for 2 weeks or a month on the following hardware?

Now on nVidia site min req is 550w for the 470GTX, i am guessing elcheapo PSU too i am not sure sure about the somewhat power hungry Phenom X6. I am thinking of underclocking it and dropping the voltage.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H
Graphics: ASUS ENGTX470,
Memory: Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 4GB
Power: Jetech 600w PSU
1st Storage: 1x Kingston V100 128GB SSD
2nd Storage: 1x Samsung Spinpoint F1 750GB

Afterwhich i will buy a Corsair 800~900w PSU.

You can give it a good run while you get the 'real' PSU, as long as you don't do any kind of overclocking and keep the system well ventilated. The PSU will be running at (probably) 65-70%+ load but it should be ok (theoretically).

so, you're going from one cheap psu that killed your system, to another cheap psu that could kill your system again?

Because I have gone 5 months without a computer and can't wait any longer. Having an xp1800+ that can't even play flash 360p videos it's my mates psu that I am lending for the time being. So I have at least something. Might even not use the gtx470 but will need to see if my video card is ok.

What makes you think you need 800-900watts for that system? The card said 550w, so that's what you need.

I hope you aren't thinking that 550w meant just the card? No no no no, not at all. The requirements on video card boxes are for the entire system.

I guarantee a Corsair 500w would run that system without any problems. They most likely overestimate the requirement by a bit because they are aware of peoples choices in buying cheap PSU's that don't output what they claim...room for overhead.

How does a Video card manufacturer know what hardware the Video card will be dropped in ? and how does a video card manufacturer know how many video cards you will have....fans...fan controllers...fancy lights...or even W/C...What CPU, how many CPU's ???? Sorry but your analogy is wrong.

Also the average power output of different PSU's are different, a PSU that says max output 550 may realistically only give out an average of 400....PSU's are something in a system that are underated and if you go for the cheap PSU's that come with a weeks warranty and no brand name chances are you will regret it.

Have patience and go for the Corsair 800....

Actually he is right. The number on the box is what they suggest for a PSU, so that would mean the whole system. A pair of GTX 580's couldn't pull 550W of power. My i7 2600k setup with a HD 5870 idles at ~100W from the wall. That means the PSU is maybe pushing 80 - 85W of power. Loaded I know this setup cannot draw 500W of power given the 95W cpu TDP, and the 188W TDP of the GPU. Even with some extra stuff in the case this rig could only pull 350 - 400W tops.

Yes Logical, it's true. The vast majority of people buy way too much PSU because they fail to understand the requirement on the box.

The specs are right here from nVidia themselves:

right below that
Minimum Recommended SYSTEM Power (W) - 550 w

It says SYSTEM power right there on their own website. I'm sure the guys who invented the card would know :)

See, 800 watters are for SLI/Crossfire setups. And they suggest even more if you overclock your CPU. A GTX480 uses 250w max btw.

This is my point, on the Nvidia website it states minimum 'recommended' system power 550w that bit is true but as they say minimum that would mean on a system that isnt power hungry...as is said 'that i highlighted in bold', the bigger the system the more power needed.

Besides, what is wrong with getting more than you need especially if your intent on upgrading in the future ?

You told the guy he would be ok with a 500w PSU when you also stated the recomended minimum by Nvidia was 550w.

You'd probably be ok in the short term if it's a decent power supply... I limped around with an older system and a 420w piece of crap that came with my case for a few years.

With that said please please please invest in a good PSU. I've had absolutely 0 problems with mine (my friend has, they RMA'd it because of the fabulous 5 year warranty). Anyway... I intend to try an SLI gtx 470 setup in my system soon which will really push the limits of this psu... I"ll let you know how it goes, but I feel comfortable that it won't cause an issue

Well after a week i decided to get a Coolermaster Silent ProM 850w, for 90 which i thought was a good price. Reason being i thought to do a bit over overclocking (an addiction it seems) but the other PSU started to trip, power off so yeah i am asuming i must of been close to it's limit. Never had any problems with the coolermaster PSU and has a 5 year warranty. But thank you all for your comments.
