I just recently took a look at the server end AMD offerings for a Document Management project I'm working on. Although based on older architecture, this review was enlightening:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/2978/amd-s-12-core-magny-cours-opteron-6174-vs-intel-s-6-core-xeon

The 6 core Xeon won nearly every test that mattered. For me, the big test was virtualization performance which you would THINK would just be dominated by a 12 core processor.

Nope.

I have a feeling that the 8 core AMD solution will compare similarly to 4 or 6 (at best) core Intel solutions. However, this might be a case of AMD's price/performance ratio being right in the sweet spot. It will be interesting to see how the cards fall. The thermal envelope seems quite reasonable considering clock speeds and number of cores.

This.

I want unbiased benchmarks.
