Bethesda today confirmed that it will publish Dishonored, an all-new first-person action game under development at Arkane Studios. Dishonored will be the first project for the studio since being acquired by ZeniMax in 2010 and in case you were unaware, this particular studio was behind Arx Fatalis, the amazing Dark Messiah of Might & Magic and Bioshock 2.

Under the direction of co-creative directors, Raphael Colantonio, lead designer on Arx Fatalis, and Harvey Smith, lead designer on Deus Ex, Dishonored is set for release on X360, PS3 and PC in 2012.

Details on Dishonored will be revealed in the exclusive cover story in Game Informer’s August issue, which ships to subscribers in early July 2011 and hits newsstands on July 15th. From what we know so far, Dishonored will be a First-person stealth/action adventure game.

Raphael Colantonio said:

“At Arkane we have a passion for creating deep, immersive game experiences. To be able to finally share details of our project is both extremely exciting and satisfying.”

The combination of development and publishing choices should make this game a winner.

Hopefully.

man this is looking GOOD. that looks sort of like a highly tweaked source engine going there and the art direction really harks back to city 17.

the game sounds really interesting though. The part where they were talking about the guy getting on the roof and them not knowing you could do that and then applauding that instead of putting up an invisible wall like I'm willing to be 99.9% of other game developers would do speaks VOLUMES about how cool/fun this game could be.

Yeah if this is on a tweaked source engine, I'm alright with that. There was always an idea at the back of my mind that the source engine is very good, and someone could really make a good game with it.

This looks like it, look forward to this game, and whoever said another "Dark Messiah" count me in on that too. I still remember that game, so it was really good!

They are using a tweaked Source engine. Not that it's a bad thing. In the right hands, the Source engine can create some incredible graphics.

Looking very cool! Nice to have a completely new game to get excited about, rather than just sequels.

Yeah that's fine with me. I've seen so many comments on forums complaining of the "outdated" graphics, but I personally like the atmosphere that can be built with it.

Looking forward to this.

yeah and the thing with source is that it's STABLE and seems to be very flexible after seeing what has been done with L4D2 and cinematic mod. It has FOV, full AA and AF tweaking options and if they implement some form of multiplayer, we know the net code is rock solid.

I have a sneaky suspicion that this game could be the swan song for this iteration of Source as we know it with hopefully EP3 ushering in the new improved version of source. At least that's what I am hoping will happen.

Got to admit, I forgot all about Ep3 by now. It would be good to see for sure though.

Guys, it's modified Unreal 3.

In comments,

Q: Why doesn't Dishonored take advantage of the idTech5 engine?

A: The game was in early development before we joined Bethesda. We're certainly impressed by everything idTech5 has to offer, but Dishonored is being crafted with a custom version of the Unreal Engine, including plenty of features developed in-house.

I know people are sick of U3, but with the art style it looks really good. Like a higher quality more artistic borderlands with a setting that plays much better with the art style. The gameplay and story both look awesome too! :)
